Titans Head to State Championship

Gilmer County has made a history the last 2 seasons of taking a 4 seed, and running with it. Last season the Titans were given the 4 seed in regionals before rolling through that bracket to states. This state tournament has proven to be more of the same. After getting a 4 seed that felt low, Gilmer County handed Greater Beckley a 7 run loss, and then today led by as many as 7 on their way to an 8-4 semifinal win over #1 Huntington St. Joseph’s.

Roddick Page got the start on the mound, and worked 4 brilliant innings allowing just 1 run off 1 hit. Page was even more special at the plate driving in 5 runs while going 3/3 with a pair of doubles, and a walk.

“The Stewart brothers” as NFHS called them did their part as well with Seth Stewart driving home 2, and Jacob Stewart plating 1.

The scary moment of the game came on a Page injury in the top of the 5th which forced Kolten Holbert into relief action where he recorded 8 outs for the Titans before Remi Huffman closed the door with the final out of the game to give the Titans an 8-4 win.

Gilmer County will now advance to the state championship game Saturday for the second time in school history. The Titans will battle the winner of today’s next contest between Sherman and Pendleton County.

Tonight we mourn the loss of Gilmer County native Mr. Greg James.

The Gilmer native was the long time band director of the literally world renowned Richwood High School marching band taking them as far as the mind could imagine to perform.

Rest in Peace sir! Your legacy will live on, and you’ll be missed.
