Southeast Georgia Judo Club Senesi Michael E. Brown Judo/JJ/Self Defense What is Judo? Judo grew out of the hand-to-hand fighting techniques of the ancient Japanese Samurai. Judo won again.

Those Samurai wore armor, so they could not punch each other, or kick. Instead they tried to throw their opponents to the ground, and immobilize them. That style of fighting was originally called Jiu-Jitsu. By 1882 Japan had modernized, and no one was wearing armor any more. A brilliant young school teacher named Jigoro Kano studied Jiu-Jitsu, threw away the parts that were no longer relevant, and

modified the rest into a system of fighting that he called Judo (the Gentle Way). Judo soon had two different "baptisms by fire". The Tokyo police department organized a competition between Kano's new Judo school which was called the Kodokan, and several of the old and famous Jiu-Jitsu schools. Judo won convincingly. Later, President Theodore Roosevelt in the United States organized a match between an American wrestler and one of Kano's Judo students. Having proved itself as a marvelous system of fighting and self-defense, Judo began to spread around the world. Like soccer, it never quite caught on in the United States. But also like soccer, it became hugely popular everywhere else. In 1964 Judo became an Olympic sport, and today you can find websites that claim Judo is the second most popular sport in the world. True Judo however, is much more than just a sport. A judo match is very much like life itself. Your adrenaline is pumping, and you are trying as hard as you can to accomplish something. But like as not, you wind up getting boomed down to the ground. (Don't worry, Judo teaches you how to fall.) Why? Because sooner or later life booms everybody down to the ground. What are you going to do? Quit? Or pick yourself up and try again. Judo kids do not quit. They are taught every class to try again. Judo teaches respect, discipline, self-confidence, and sincerity. It also teaches you not to use your abilities for wrongful purposes.

COACH SPOTLIGHT
Meet Senpai Dave Bender!
From starting his judo journey at 10 years old to serving as a student leader in his youth, Senpai Dave Bender has always been a cornerstone of the Southeast Georgia Judo Club.
His drive led him to graduate high school a year early to serve our country in the U.S. Army, where he serves as a Behavioral Health Specialist, passionately supporting fellow soldiers through the challenges of service.
Today, Dave is a dedicated soldier and a vital mentor at our club. He’s gone from being the student to coaching and mentoring the next generation of judokas with the same discipline and heart he’s shown throughout his entire life. We are honored to have him on our mats!

📢 IMPORTANT: Judo Class Cancellation for Tonight
Hi everyone,
We have decided to cancel all Judo classes for tonight, Thursday, March 26th. We’ve had several students reach out who are either currently down with a bug or still recovering, and we want to make sure everyone has the time they need to get back to 100%. Our priority is keeping the mats a healthy and safe environment for all our judokas.

🥋 COACH SPOTLIGHT: Senpai Joe Sumoski
A Legacy of Leadership
From the baseball diamond to the dojo floor, Senpai Joe Sumoski has dedicated his life to coaching. With a deep history in recreational sports, Joe knows how to lead with patience and discipline.
The Road to Black Belt
Joe’s passion for Judo is evident in his current journey toward earning his Black Belt. He leads by example, showing our youth that growth never stops. When it comes to competition or practice, Joe’s specialty is the Harai goshi (sweeping hip throw)—a technique that requires the exact kind of balance and focus he instills in his students.
Family & Community First
Above all, Joe is a family man committed to the Glennville area. He doesn't just teach Judo; he mentors the next generation of leaders in our community.
Let’s give a big shout-out to Senpai Joe in the comments! 👇
