Pressure Training:
All too often we see "traditional" martial arts schools just practice solo kata and never delve into the applications. Those few that do practice the applications tend to always do it with a fully compliant partner. Then, when a self-defense situation arises, they fail.
They fail not because the martial art is bad. Rather, they fail because the training method is lacking. Remember that the classical "so-called traditional" martial arts have been tested in actual life and death combat, so we know they work.
Today at the Ryushikan Hombu Dojo, my white belts were doing a Jujutsu technique. They had the basic idea down as they had been practicing this technique for two months. I decided it was time to up them from stage 0 to stage 1 of pressure testing. The uke was told to resist the throw. Suddenly no one could throw their uke.
The stage 0 with a full compliant uke allowed them to miss some key points. Those missing key points became apparent with stage 1 of pressure testing.
The main key point they were missing was propper fit of tori's body to uke's body. The other key points they were missing included arm angle, proper torque, and proper redirection of force; all things not required with a fully compliant uke.
After showing them the key points they were missing, they were able to execute the throw with their uke resisting. These white belts will train this tech at stage 1 pressure testing for several months before going to stage 2.
All instructors that are trained in the Kopo-ryu Bugei philosophy train and teach their martial arts this way.
