Frame repair! Oh me, FRiday a week ago, I got home from a lovely ride on my flagship Mach 2, called yellowbike2. Walking in the driveway I felt the rear brake dragging a little, so I put it on the stand to adjust it. While doing that I looked over the frame and - Oh MY! I found out why the drake was dragging! This picture is the left rear dropout and chainstay - the stay is cracked! Sheared clear through. I can't adjust THAT out. There was debate - in my head and with some friends - is this fixable. Maybe, though I don't feel good about either of the methods suggested. This iteration of my 'flagship'bike was made in late 2014, it has served me well for 11.5 years, thousands of miles.
My best bike needs a new frame. And I need something to ride meanwhile. Well, it's in the right place to feed both needs!
So, strip down the old bike. As it happens, new in the used bike department here I received an Easy Racers' Gold Rush just a few days before this tragedy. Parts from the old bike are now on the Gold Rush - the white bike below. First job was to 'morph' the Gold Rush as closely as possible into the peculiar comforts of my yellowbike2. The seat moved over, the crankset, my rear wheel. The Gold Rush really is a fine bike, and acceptable substitute for a month or so. The second picture here is the Gold Rush as received, the third is the Gold Rush as altered for this rider.
I have test ridden this temporary Yellowbike substitute, it's a really fine bike. I don't have to hurry to build a new Mach 2 frame.
So, time to address a new frame, which I've done the last three days. Hey, it rained all day today off and on, the frame is almost done! Picture four below is a partially made new frame, shown with the now stripped bare broken frame. And the last picture, taken this morning, show the complete new frame, lacking only the diagonal and other braze on features to be complete.
This goes to my painter to wait for the yellow color to come up on the line - it might be 2-3 weeks until I can get the new frame powdercoated. I've had fun making a new frame, I don't do it that often this year.
