There are certain days in life that remind you what really matters, and yesterday was one of those days.
When DJ from Prairie Grit and Craig reached out and asked if we could help Wyatt cross a coyote off his bucket list, there wasn't a second of hesitation on our end. The moment I learned about Wyatt and what he faces every day, I wasn't thinking about giving him a rain check. I was thinking about how we were going to make this happen.
One of my favorite songs is Cody Johnson's 'Til You Can't. The message has always hit home for me. Don't wait. Don't put things off. Don't tell someone "maybe next time." Life gives us opportunities to make a difference, and when those opportunities come, you take them.
Helping Wyatt chase his dream was one of those opportunities.
I can't begin to imagine the challenges that come with being in a wheelchair every single day. But what impressed me most about Wyatt wasn't his condition. It was his attitude. His determination. His work ethic. The kid grinds as hard as any of us. He has a great head on his shoulders and carries himself in a way that makes everyone around him better.
Honestly, spending a day with Wyatt makes you want to work harder, complain less, and appreciate what you've been given.
We have to give a huge thank you to our good friend Mike Stolba for coming out and doing what he does best behind the call, and of course Sambuca for being the incredible decoy dog she is. Mike and I have spent years chasing coyotes together, and it meant a lot to have him there helping make this day happen.
The coyotes didn't exactly cooperate the way we wanted them to. But that's coyote hunting.
Five stands. Four coyotes spotted. A lot of excitement.
Then came the moment.
A coyote stopped out there at 273 yards in a crosswind, facing us chest-on. We asked Wyatt if he could make the shot.
There wasn't an ounce of hesitation.
Just confidence.
The trigger broke, and just like that, a dream he'd been chasing became reality.
I've been around a lot of coyotes and a lot of hunts, but that is a moment I will never forget.
The coyote ended up making it into a hole before we could retrieve it. We talked about reaching down there, but none of us were brave enough to volunteer an arm! If we'd had a shovel, we'd have dug him out. But honestly, by that point, it wasn't really about the coyote anymore.
It was about Wyatt.
It was about watching a young man refuse to let obstacles define him.
It was about seeing someone chase a dream and make it happen.
It was about being reminded that life is good if you're willing to live it and love it.
As Cold Front Customs, it was an absolute honor and privilege to spend the day with you, Wyatt. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your journey.
And don't worry, buddy—we're not done yet.
We're going to do this again. We're going to get an aggressive coyote in front of Sambuca, and this winter we're going to put a thermal in your hands and get you a thermal coyote too.
Thank you, DJ. Thank you, Craig. Thank you, Mike and Mason. And most importantly, thank you, Wyatt.
You reminded all of us that the power of moving forward isn't found in perfect circumstances. It's found in grit, determination, and the willingness to keep chasing your dreams no matter what stands in your way.
We're all better people for having spent a day with you.
