Winter is coming - no groomed trails at Spooner this winter.
There is maybe something happening in South Lake though.

In the mean time here at Tunnel Creek Cafe:

For those not in San Francisco, we will have the game on the big screen here in the cafe.

$3.50 pints
Game starts at 5:00 Friday 10/27th.

That would be a Willie Mays autograph on that baseball!
(from a game in the mid 60s that my grand dad took me to)

We plan to have a wide variety of sports on the tv this winter.
Like most Barcelona games, World Cup Downhills, World Cup XC skiing, Biathlon, maybe some of my climbing exploits.
And possibly a monday night football game or two.

Hi XC skiers!
Hi everyone - I hope you are enjoying the great summer weather and are getting out to play!

Kevin and Val at Tahoe Cross country have offered past Spooner Lake XC Ski Area season pass holders the same early season deal as their season pass holders. Go to their web site for the details! The deadline is this Friday for the best deals.

http://www.tahoexc.org/

Work continues on our new bike cafe in Incline at Tunnel Creek Station - we should be moving in Late July with the cafe at the end of the Flume Trail mountain bike ride. The bike rental shop will continue in operation through the summer at Spooner. Next summer our bike rental and shuttle operation will be located at Tunnel Creek Station exclusively.

If you have 10 punch passes not used for spooner you can use them on our summer mountain bike/hike summer shuttle and when the cafe opens you can use the pass card for a sandwich/panini and a drink - or coffee and a pastry.

All the best,

Patti, Max and Caitlin

Hi Everyone -

Yes the rumors are true. This was our last season operating Spooner Lake XC Ski Area. A very difficult year snow wise, an opportunity in the wings and a proposed increase in our lease fee by State Parks for our five year renewal kind of sealed the deal.
And maybe it was just time after 27 winters to move on. It's been quite a ride at the ski area, coolest job in the world when there is good snow at the right times. But we were much younger when we started the area many many years ago and we simply cannot continue to hope and bank that it will be a good snow year to make a living.

This has been a really hard decision for us. It has been our life and you our extended family.

We will, after this summer, move our bike shop - Flume Trail Bikes - rental/demo mountain bikes, shuttle service, to Tunnel Creek Station in Incline at the end of the Flume Trail Ride. This is the old bunkhouse at the stables at the Ponderosa Ranch. The building is being remodeled by the property owner and brought to code. And we will run a bike cafe there year round. Come in for a great cup of coffee in the morning on your way by or a beer after your day playing in our very awesome Tahoe Basin.
We are really psyched at this change in our lives - but do want to help in any way we can to keep groomed skiing going at Spooner.

So what 's next - there is a group being gathered to form a ski club that may at some point go to non profit status to handle the parking lot plowing and grooming of the ski trails in conjunction with a concessionaire running the ski/snowshoe rental operation and the cabin rentals. This proposal will have to be submitted to the state park with their request for proposal for the ski area that will be issued sometime early summer I think. I will be available to help with the details as well as would happily help train groomers and even groom a couple of days a week to get it going next winter.

Send me an e mail if you want to be part of the restructuring of Spooner skiing and I will forward it to the group.

Also send e mails to State Parks if you support future skiing at Spooner and that by not grooming ski trails will limit the use for the vast majority of people that have used the park in winter for the last 27 years. Ask to be put on the e mail list that will get notice of the RFP for the spooner concession contract.

More snow. Again where was this in December. Not sure if there is enough to keep the snowcat off of the dirt. I'll be out on the snowmobile this morning and see. Last storm the snowmobile brought up dirt.
The great folks at Tahoe cross country will honor spooner lake season pass holders AND ten day pass holders for the rest of their season.
A big thanks - very generous!
