Hi Everyone -
Yes the rumors are true. This was our last season operating Spooner Lake XC Ski Area. A very difficult year snow wise, an opportunity in the wings and a proposed increase in our lease fee by State Parks for our five year renewal kind of sealed the deal.
And maybe it was just time after 27 winters to move on. It's been quite a ride at the ski area, coolest job in the world when there is good snow at the right times. But we were much younger when we started the area many many years ago and we simply cannot continue to hope and bank that it will be a good snow year to make a living.
This has been a really hard decision for us. It has been our life and you our extended family.
We will, after this summer, move our bike shop - Flume Trail Bikes - rental/demo mountain bikes, shuttle service, to Tunnel Creek Station in Incline at the end of the Flume Trail Ride. This is the old bunkhouse at the stables at the Ponderosa Ranch. The building is being remodeled by the property owner and brought to code. And we will run a bike cafe there year round. Come in for a great cup of coffee in the morning on your way by or a beer after your day playing in our very awesome Tahoe Basin.
We are really psyched at this change in our lives - but do want to help in any way we can to keep groomed skiing going at Spooner.
So what 's next - there is a group being gathered to form a ski club that may at some point go to non profit status to handle the parking lot plowing and grooming of the ski trails in conjunction with a concessionaire running the ski/snowshoe rental operation and the cabin rentals. This proposal will have to be submitted to the state park with their request for proposal for the ski area that will be issued sometime early summer I think. I will be available to help with the details as well as would happily help train groomers and even groom a couple of days a week to get it going next winter.
Send me an e mail if you want to be part of the restructuring of Spooner skiing and I will forward it to the group.
Also send e mails to State Parks if you support future skiing at Spooner and that by not grooming ski trails will limit the use for the vast majority of people that have used the park in winter for the last 27 years. Ask to be put on the e mail list that will get notice of the RFP for the spooner concession contract.
