Peptides and GLP-1s are everywhere right now. And they work, for what they’re designed to do.

But here’s what they don’t do: they don’t build muscle. Left unchecked, rapid weight loss on these protocols burns through muscle right along with the fat, and muscle is the thing that actually drives your metabolism, your strength, and how you age.

This is where CrossFit earns its keep. Structured strength training plus enough protein is the single best defense against losing muscle while you’re losing weight. The scale moves because of the meds. What you look like and how you function once you get there is determined by what you do in the gym.

If you’re on a peptide or GLP-1 protocol and not lifting, you’re leaving most of the result on the table.

We’ve got members navigating this right now. Happy to talk through how training should look alongside it.

Men don’t talk about it enough, so let’s talk about it.

June is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, and CrossFit does more for guys’ mental health than most of us give it credit for.

It’s not just the workout. It’s having somewhere to put the stress instead of carrying it home. It’s the 5am crew who notices when you stop showing up. It’s getting your ass kicked by a WOD and walking out lighter than you walked in, every single time.

Strength training reduces anxiety and depression symptoms. That’s not a hot take, that’s research. But the barbell is only half of it. The other half is the people standing around it who actually give a damn whether you’re doing okay.

If you’ve got a guy in your life who’s going through it… the invite to come try a class costs you nothing and might mean everything.

The women in our gym don’t come back because of the programming.

They come back because of each other.

There’s something that happens when a group of women decide to stop apologizing for taking up space... stop shrinking... stop working out alone in the corner of a Planet Fitness hoping nobody notices them.

They get loud. They get competitive. They cheer for each other like it’s the last rep of the last workout of their lives.

We see it every single week at CFE. Women who started terrified... now coaching each other through the hard stuff. Not because we told them to. Just because that’s what happens when the culture is right.

That’s not a fitness class. That’s a tribe.

If you’ve been doing this alone, you don’t have to.

CROSSFITTERS IN HEALTHCARE!

This month we are doing special features on our CrossFitters who work in healthcare.

Today we feature Stef Vesper, one of our evening CrossFitters.

My role: I am a Nurse Practitioner at Infinite Wellness/Infinite Vitality in Glen Carbon! I was first interested in Infinite due to it being outside of the hospital setting and knowing that I would get to help people who TRUELY wanted help; not those just being forced to get help. I had worked in Oncology for the 6 years before that, so burnt out was an understatement. I was determined, and promised myself I would find a place that I was going to be happy at. I had never been to Infinite or heard about Infinite before I applied but something about it felt right. And honestly, it was the best decision I’ve made for my career.

I started CrossFit because I needed something different. I had been in what I call the “bro gym” for 10 years of my life and it wasn’t fun for me anymore. At that point I started Peloton workouts at home and although I loved those (and still do), I needed to get out of the house and into a community. I was going back and forth from work to home and needed something in between. That’s when my boss (who had been going to CFE for years) suggested I try CrossFit. So there I went and fell in love with the gym all over again. I have always loved the big gym feel, but with the garage doors open, and great people around me, it felt like a I was part of a community.

How CrossFit helps with my career? Well..honestly it keeps me sane 😅 When my work day is done, I’m ready to turn off my brain power, turn on my muscle power and purge all that pent up energy from the day. It’s also important that I practice what I preach!”

Please post the comments below to thank Stef for her contribution to the health of our community!

Major shout-out to our future elite fighter pilot, Will Hunt!

He had a goal of running the Route 66 10K in less than 60 minutes (roughly a 9:30 mile time).

He & I have been working together on his running program for a few months.

Yesterday, my dude Will ran the Route 66 10K in 51:43....
..holding down a 8:15 mile.

Please post here to congratulate Will on being an amazing dude, a great runner, and someone making us all proud!

CROSSFITTERS IN HEALTHCARE!

This month we are doing special features on our CrossFitters who work in healthcare.

Today we feature Cassandra Sissom, one of the amazing female athletes from our 5/6 am workout squad!

“I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in IL, MO and UT and I own a group mental health practice that serves clients in those states.

“I am super fascinated by people and understanding why people do/think/behave the way they do. I worked in residential nonprofits for about 15 years and was totally burnt out and my mental and physical health were really suffering and I needed to make a change.

“I noticed a lot of amazing counselors who were burnt out and couldn’t provide care to clients because of the burnout. I wanted to create a practice that supported clinicians to do high quality work and be paid well without having to be exhausted and burned out.

“My friends Wes and Lakin talked me into trying “functional fitness”. I started for mental health support knowing that exercise is what is needed for brain health.

“After doing it I’ve done more research and learned how CrossFit (specifically) is highly beneficial for ADHD, depression and anxiety as it boosts dopamine and norepinephrine levels. The varied exercises, time limits and community environment provides the structure & instant gratification that the brain loves!”

CROSSFITTERS IN HEALTHCARE!

This month we are doing special features on our CrossFitters who work in healthcare.

Today we feature another amazing person who’s a part of our 9:30 am workout squad… nurse McKenzi Mitchell!

Show her some love in the comments below!

WHAT’S YOUR ROLE IN HEALTHCARE? I am a registered nurse who just recently switched over to the float pool here at St Elizabeth’s which means I work on a cardiac unit, med surg, ICU and ER. I have loved getting to experience all the different floors and become a more well-rounded nurse.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THAT CAREER? I have always loved taking care of people and learning new things which is something I get to experience everyday in this career.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO CROSSFIT? I started CrossFit about 3 years ago now and I remember at that point in my life I wanted something that would hold me accountable and switch up my normal workout routine. I now love it so much and am so thankful I began this journey with such wonderful people. :)

HOW DOES DOING CROSSFIT HELP YOU IN YOUR CAREER?
When taking care of patients, there comes times of strength that is necessary as far as physical and emotional. CrossFit has helped me physically feel more capable of helping patients when they start to heal with their mobility and CrossFit has made me an overall more motivated and successful individual!

Some of our CrossFitters ran the Donut Dash 5K this morning!

As Coach Wes told us, “This was Lakin and I’s first 5K. It was a goal of mine to get one in and now that I’ve done it, I’m looking forward to the next one! Even better that I got to crush this goal with her :) “

“Also, loved/had to do this one for the fact that it was a DONUT 5K and I used to eat a dozen donuts daily.”

Please show some love & congratulations for in the comments!

You don't know what you're capable of until you're forced to find out. Every scaled rep, every extra round, every "I didn't think I could" moment is proof that your ceiling is higher than you think. At CrossFit Edwardsville, we love watching people surprise themselves. Come in, put in the work, and leave better than you arrived. 🙌
