As we enter October we at HealthWest want to take this time to honor the strength and courage of those who are now battling or have battled breast cancer. We recognize those in our HealthWest family that have struggled with this diagnosis as well as their family and friends. We know that this illness has impacted our community partners and the greater Muskegon community as well. It is also a time to honor and remember those that we have lost to this disease.
Breast cancer remains the second most common form of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in America. Early detection is crucial and it saves lives. Please reach out to your doctor and arrange for a screening if you have not yet done so.
A breast cancer diagnosis, like many medical diagnosis, can bring mental health challenges with it. Self care is important but beyond that we know that while it can be difficult for those with the diagnosis, it can also impact the family and friends who are supporting the person with the diagnosis. Care for the individual with the diagnosis is important, but it is also important for the caregiver, family and friends. Don't be afraid to reach out for assistance. It is OK to ask for help. Start by talking to your personal care physician about your mental health needs. There is no shame in doing this. If things become overwhelming, you can reach out to many community health providers including HealthWest.
