The hunter did everything right with this track we did on Saturday, January 3. He shot the deer around 7:30 and waited 2 hours to start the track on the deer. He bumped the deer out of a bed at around 200 yards and backed out. He gave us a call around 2:00 to resume the track. We started the track at the hit site and proceeded to the bed. After the bed, blood was sparse and Hoover was on a good line until we came to a dry slough. He had a bit of trouble finding the line in the slough, but after the third reset he showed us some blood and in a few hundred yards we found the deer. I think the slough area created a huge scent pool with it getting later in the day and the scent settling into that lower area.

We help recover this deer during this past gun season. The Hunter had good blood for a bit and then it stopped and it was getting dark, so he decided to back out and gave us a call. We met the next morning and found the deer in a matter of minutes.

We tracked this deer on Nov. 19, he showed up on camera Nov. 20. You can see in the photo he was hit high and back.

Just something to think about…Effect of Temperature on Point of Impact
Temperature Influence
Temperature can significantly affect the point of impact (POI) of a bow. As temperatures rise or fall, the materials in the bow, including limbs and strings, can expand or contract. This change can lead to shifts in how the bow performs.
Observations from Archers
High Temperatures: Many archers report that their arrows tend to hit higher when shooting in hot conditions. For instance, a shift of about 2 inches at 50 yards has been noted for every 10-degree increase in temperature.
Cold Temperatures: Conversely, colder weather can make bows feel stiffer and may affect the draw weight, potentially leading to lower POI.
Factors Contributing to POI Changes
Material Properties: Different materials react differently to temperature changes. For example, wood bows may perform better in colder weather, while synthetic materials might be less affected.
Air Density: Hot air is less dense than cold air, which can also influence arrow flight. Less drag in hot conditions may lead to higher shots.
Practical Implications
Archers should be aware of these temperature effects, especially when adjusting sights or preparing for competitions. Regularly checking and adjusting equipment based on weather conditions can help maintain accuracy.

This is today’s track, almost 21 hours old over 800 yards, hooves only. The hooves I used on this I had used on 4 other tracks, I think they were pretty much used up as far as scent goes. It ended up being a good thing, it made Hoover really work on finding the trail. Attached are the maps of the tracks, both are of the same track, the one with the yellow shows a better detail of how hard Hoover worked. I think he is a pretty darn good dog!
