Corrections are a compliment.

That is something I wish we could teach every child from the very beginning.

When a coach, teacher, instructor, or mentor corrects you, it does not mean you are doing a bad job.

It means they are watching you.

It means they see what you are capable of.

It means they believe you can do better.

One of the hardest things for kids to learn is how to receive a correction without taking it personally.

“Try it again.”
“Fix this part.”
“You can do that better.”
“Slow down.”
“Give me more effort.”

Those words can feel negative to a child.

But they aren’t.

They’re an investment.

Someone is taking the time to notice the little things and help you become better than you were yesterday.

I want kids to learn to hear a correction and think:

“They believe I’m capable of more.”

Instead of:

“They think I’m not good enough.”

That difference in mindset is HUGE.

And as parents, we can help teach it.

When your child says, “My coach kept correcting me,” or “My teacher told me I need to redo it,” we don’t always have to rush in and make them feel better about it.

Sometimes the best response is:

“Good. That means they believe you can do better. What did they tell you to change?”

Teach kids not to fear correction.

Teach them to listen to it, apply it, and try again.

Because learning how to be corrected without becoming discouraged, defensive, or embarrassed is a skill they will use for the rest of their lives.

Corrections aren’t criticism.

Corrections are coaching.

And sometimes, a correction is one of the greatest compliments someone can give you. ❤️
