Why Strength?

Strength is the body’s ability to produce force. Because this is required for all human movement, it is universally valuable. For competitive athletes, even greater amounts are required for increased sport performance. Force production occurs as a combined effort between the nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems and is very specific in nature. These systems and specificities are highly trainable and improvable. Complexities aside, strength is the most fundamental motor ability which precedes, underlies, and increases all others (e.g., power, speed, mobility, and endurance). Lastly, strength development is highly tied to an athlete's injury risk profile and body composition.

Why Training?

Training is the purposeful, goal-oriented, and methodical long-term process of acquiring specific physiological adaptations of interest (e.g., strength). This opposes exercise-based approaches that are unstructured, unplanned, and without the necessary progressive direction to be effective. Simply stated, randomized exercise produces randomized results (if any at all). Well-designed training programs seek to optimize the exercise-related variables required to promote the best possible improvements respective to the defined and established goals.

Why Coaching?

Strength training is appreciably complex. However, much is scientifically known about conducting the process effectively and efficiently. Methodology and specifics relevant to exercise-based variables have been well-explored and there are known current best evidence-based practices. As such, this knowledge should be combined with intelligence and experience. This usually requires a good coach. The critical thinking and decision making of a good coach should be combined with the hard work and physical effort provided by the athlete/trainee. Coaching additionally provides individualized program design, situational adjustments, technical cueing, realtime feedback, progress tracking, and education pertinent to exercise science.
