To be prepared is half the victory. Cervantes
No matter what you are doing, being prepared for the task is a must. Whether you are going hiking in the mountains or taking your wife or girlfriend out to dinner, you need to be prepared for the worst possible scenario.
Just as you don’t want to be caught in the mountains in some unexpected, emergency situation without the proper gear and supplies, you also don’t want to be unprepared for the unexpected surprises when you are on the streets. Being caught off guard and unprepared in either case can be extremely dangerous.
It is easy to be prepared for a trip to the mountains. You educate yourself about the dangers that, though unlikely, you could face, and you prepare for every possible scenario as best as you can. You pack matches, emergency gear, your hiking stick, a knife, etc. You are careful not to neglect to take the proper precautions when you are set to spend a day or longer in the mountains and you should do the same when you leave your home to go into the city.
Educate yourself on the possible dangers that you may encounter, although you know that these dangers are rare. Know how to deal with these “emergency situations” should you find yourself caught up in one of these scenarios. Be prepared and aware.
Don’t wander mindlessly around town, anymore than you would mindlessly hike through the mountains. Sure, running into a street thug set on doing you bodily harm when you are going out to dinner is rare, but mountain lion attacks are also fairly rare, yet every year we read about people being killed in both situations.
