Congratulations to Taryn and Alyssa for their accomplishments at their first track meet of their senior season! Both combined with a couple teammates to help take home 1st in the 4x1600 and then they came in 2nd and 3rd in the 2-mile run a bit later. Their efficient work in the offseason set the tone - looking forward to watching them kill it in their last season!

Gym Talk: Can specific foods help injuries?
Injuries suck and sometimes there's nothing that could have been done to prevent them especially when it comes to contact injuries. However, did you know that some foods contain traits that promote more inflammation that may slow healing? Did you also know that there are certain foods that assist in reducing inflammation which can promote a better environment for healing to occur? It’s pretty cool what foods can do for us and the agency that I received my nutrition certification through put together this helpful infographic which showcases what can be done to assist the healing process. Some foods that can also be included more specifically: tomatoes, green leafy vegetables, specific fruits - strawberries, blueberries, cherries, and oranges. Obviously there are many other non-food remedies that help with healing but most don't think about cleaning up their nutrition to help with injury recovery, food for thought. (you see what I did there...👍)

Sometimes we don't need to add things to our busy lives to improve. Better yet, we should be removing things that are slowing us down.

Identify one thing at a time and make it your priority to execute with your full attention every day.

A little shout out to Mary Delehant- Candelaria for tackling her old smoking habit again. She's already quit completely and is working through the patches - hang in there Mary!
BIG CHANGES AHEAD!!

Great job Noelle Franks for losing almost 10lbs in less than a month! All while dealing with things on her plate that kept her from working out as frequently as her normal routine. Small changes in nutrition make huge impacts, keep up the great work!

Remember...

Motivation helps in the short term, but the main driver of your goal is what keeps you on course over the long term and during the dog-days and when speed bumps come your way. Make sure you identify your driver(s) as the inspirational pictures and messages only offer slight spikes of focus. Remember why you want what you want.

Had a conversation over the weekend with an athlete who believed they were out of shape. They were looking for a conditioning regimen to incorporate each week on multiple days to get their endurance back (on top of a practice schedule). Through a few questions we were able to uncover the "out-of-shape" feeling they were having was not due to lack of activity but in this case due to improper fueling. The feeling of tiredness was actually muscle fatigue from lack of recovery and not necessarily from an incapable body. This would most likely turn into overtraining if the body was pushed to do more work and most likely result in even worse performance. Regardless if your an organized sport athlete or an athlete of life, proper fueling is essential. This is essential to proper muscle recovery, keeping the late night cravings away, and as in the case above, maintaining and even enhancing work/sport performance. Sometimes the simplest things will serve us the greatest results, you just need to look over your own habits and start with one thing.
How is your diet?
How is your sleep?
How is your activity?
How can you improve one of the categories above? Start there.

Lacrosse Ball your arch! Seated or standing, easiest thing to do after waking up. Not just a pre/post hike ritual but for all the walking/standing I do on normal days, it certainly helps every day of the week. Find a tight spot, put some body weight into it, flex and extend the toes while you do it. Your knees will thank you. @ South Mountain Hiking Trails

Got a message from of this young man receiving this honor. He's too humble to share this himself but he definitely earned this award. The marines received someone with great potential and I'm glad they're noticing.
