The PenMet Parks Board of Park Commissioners meets Tuesday, Sept. 22 for a study session and regular meeting. Tentative agenda items include:

Study session 5 p.m.
✅ 2027 Legislative priorities
✅ Review of the proposed draft 2027 Capital Improvement Plan

Regular meeting 6 p.m.
✅ Second reading of the amended 2026 capital budget
✅ Adoption of the Children's Bill of Rights in Sports

The Board of Park Commissioners meets in the PenMet Parks District Headquarters, 2416 14th Ave NW. All meetings are open to the public.

🏃‍♀️Cross country season is off and running!🏃‍♂️

Our trails were full of energy this week as high school runners competed in a XC district meet hosted by GHHS XC. It was great seeing Gig Harbor and Peninsula High School runners looping Sehmel Homestead Park.

We’re proud to provide the open spaces where athletes can run, compete and make memories right at home!

And we’re just getting started. Middle school XC meets are coming to Sehmel soon! 👟

Entries are completely free and open to individuals, families, local businesses and organizations. Show off your scarecrow (and maybe win) on Oct. 3 at Scarecrow Festival at Sehmel Homestead Park!

⚠️ Facility Closure Alert ⚠️: Our Neighborhood Greens Mini Golf Course is closed Friday, Sept. 18 for the Pierce County Su***de Prevention Summit and Bridge to HOPE 5K, which will be held on the PenMet Parks Recreation Center Campus. Regular mini golf operations resume Saturday & Sunday from 12-8 p.m.

The Recreation Center will also close early on Friday at 10 a.m. to support the summit, which is a free community event bringing together behavioral health professionals, healthcare providers, first responders, educators, community partners, families and residents to learn, connect and take action. The event runs from 12-7 p.m. Find more details at the link in comments.

We can’t wait for our Specialized Nature Explorers program with Harbor WildWatch!

Nature Exploreres is an engaging, hands-on outdoor experience designed for individuals with intellectual disabilities to connect with nature, build friendships and explore the world around them. It runs weekly on Thursdays from 10:30-11:30 a.m. until Oct. 8.

This week and next week we are joined by Harbor WildWatch at DeMolay Sandspit Park and Narrows Beach! We have plenty of room left, so we’d love if you joined us!

⚠️ PARK IMPACT NOTICE ⚠️: Sehmel Homestead Park will be extra busy Wednesday (9/16) for the Gig Harbor High School XC team dual meet. Expect limited parking availability and a lot of athletes running along the outer park trail in the afternoon. If you're a regular at Sehmel, consider a trip McCormick Forest Park or Rotary Bark Park as less busy alternatives to get your daily dose of forested serenity.

This Friday Pierce County is hosting its first ever Su***de Prevention Summit and Bridge to HOPE 5K at our Recreation Center. The Summit offers opportunities to build su***de prevention skills, access local resources and strengthen connections across our community.

FACILITY IMPACT: The Rec Center will close at 10 am Friday to support this event, which will use the full facility for workshops and seminars. The Neighborhood Greens Mini Golf Course is also closed on Friday, due to the expected imapct of this event on our campus. Visitors should expect a full parking lot. Overflow parking will be in place to support the additional guests.

Senior Bingo at HQ is CANCELED this week.

Only five days until the Su***de Prevention Summit!

Guests can expect an art therapy experience, grief support groups, emotional support dogs, and a meaningful bead ceremony honoring those lost to su***de.

We can’t wait for the event on September 18, 2026, at the PenMet Parks Recreation Center as we come together in a meaningful way to learn, connect, and support our community.

🚧 Sehmel Homestead Park Trail Construction 🚧

Starting next week crews will be out repairing sections of asphalt trail throughout Sehmel Homestead Park. Please avoid construction areas and expect machinery and loud noises.

Areas under repair include patches near the amphitheater, meadow, intersection and baseball fields.

Construction will begin Monday, Sept. 14 and is expected to continue until the end of the month. Thank you for your patience as we complete this project!

Today, we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the courage and sacrifice of those who responded.

We are grateful for the first responders and military members in our community who serve others and protect our freedoms every day. Thank you for your dedication and sacrifice.
