Most people don’t think about grip strength until they notice changes…

→ Jars feel harder to open
→ Carrying equipment feels heavier
→ Your hands tire out faster than they used to

But a landmark study found grip strength predicts mortality better than blood pressure.

Here is what that means: your grip reflects muscle mass, physical function, and how well you’re adapting to the demands of paddling.

Good news: it's trainable at any age!

✅ Farmer's carries: Pick something heavy and walk while carrying it — kettlebells, loaded grocery bags, or your paddle gear!
✅ Dead hangs: Grab a bar and hang from it as long as you can.
✅ Plate pinches: Pinch a weight plate between your fingers and hold it at your side.

Your lats are stealing your shoulder health. Here's how.

The latissimus dorsi — that big fan-shaped muscle running from your lower back to your upper arm — is the powerhouse of every paddle stroke. It drives the pull. It generates the force. You could not paddle without it.

But here's what most paddlers don't know:

A fatigued, shortened lat pulls your humerus (your upper arm bone) forward and inward — compressing your rotator cuff against the bony ridge of your shoulder blade. That's the exact mechanism behind impingement. That's why your shoulder aches after long sessions.

You're not injured. Your lat is just stuck in the position it held for two hours.

The fix isn't rest. It's release → mobility → active control — in that order.
