Honoring the Heroes of Operation Gothic Serpent
On this day, we pause to remember the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication of the men who took part in Operation Gothic Serpent. Thirty-one years ago, on October 3rd and 4th, 1993, U.S. forces embarked on a mission to capture key militia leaders in Mogadishu, Somalia. What was planned to be a quick operation turned into an intense battle, now etched into history as the Battle of Mogadishu.
We honor the 18 American soldiers who gave their lives during the fierce firefight, as well as the hundreds of Somali civilians caught in the crossfire. Their bravery, resilience, and the bonds forged under fire remind us of the cost of freedom and the power of brotherhood in combat. For the survivors, their courage in the face of overwhelming odds continues to inspire.
The lessons of Operation Gothic Serpent have shaped military strategy and tactics for generations to come, and the memory of those who served will forever be remembered with respect and gratitude.
To those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and to all who served: we honor you. Your legacy lives on in the hearts of a grateful nation.
