NHL insider does not write off Maple Leafs from pursuing Connor McDavid in 2026 free agency in case he leaves Oilers

Toronto Maple Leafs haven’t been ruled out of the Connor McDavid sweepstakes, despite his star status with Edmonton. NHL insider Chris Johnston told The Steve Dangle Podcast the Maple Leafs “would likely have interest” if McDavid enters unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2026. Johnston noted that Original Six teams—including Toronto—could lure McDavid if they present a credible winning plan and sufficient cap space. “You need to have a plan…show why you’re going to win,” he said, highlighting the importance of organized strategy and room to accommodate a max-level contract. McDavid, who led the league with 100 points in 67 games and helped Edmonton to the Stanley Cup Final, remains eligible to sign an extension or test the market. As the Leafs potentially move on from Mitch Marner, keeping flexibility could position them for a blockbuster bid in 2026.

Islanders tipped for 'blockbuster' trade to land both Matthew Schaefer & James Hagens in 2025 NHL Draft, per analyst

NHL analyst Sean McIndoe suggests the New York Islanders—armed with the No. 1 overall pick—may orchestrate a splashy draft-day trade to select both top defense prospect Matthew Schaefer and promising center James Hagens. McIndoe believes they’ll stay locked in on Schaefer at No. 1, then trade back into the first round—if Hagens slips beyond the top five—to secure the Long Island native. Team sources suggest GM Mathieu Darche could offer assets like Noah Dobson, future first-round picks, or prospects to land that extra pick. Adding both Schaefer and Hagens would strengthen the blue line while injecting hometown identity, a win–win for development and fan engagement. Darche’s bold move could reshape the Islanders’ future.

With free agency looming, his declaration sets the stage for negotiations that could lock up a key playoff catalyst.

Perry—now 40—refused to entertain retirement rumors, stating: “I just want to win… Hopefully, it’s here and we can figure something out and get something done.” He emphasized having “left everything on the ice,” and is hopeful of re-signing after his contract expires July 1. With his experience, energy and a reported mutual interest from the Oilers, Perry is expected to return next season and renew the pursuit of Edmonton’s first Cup since 1990.
