Exciting news! In just about a month, I’ll be kicking off the next Basic Defensive Handgun class, and I’m eager to share more about this continually evolving course that I have been honored to teach for several years. My goal with this class is to ensure that the training is always up-to-date and relevant, incorporating insights from my experiences in ongoing training programs I attend and insights gained from real-life encounters I’ve studied.
Approximately 1.5 years ago, there was a significant turning point for this course when I had the privilege of attending Tom Givens' Fi****ms Instructor Development Course and Advanced Fi****ms Instructor class. Participating in these sessions was an eye-opening experience that validated the foundational methods I had already been teaching while also introducing me to fresh techniques that I am excited to share with my students.
For those who might not yet be familiar with Tom, he is a remarkable figure in the world of fi****ms training. About three decades ago, he developed his flagship class, Rangemaster Combative Pistol, aimed at equipping individuals to defend themselves against violent criminal threats, particularly in Memphis where his range was located. The success of this class is truly impressive, boasting a remarkable street record of 71 victories and zero losses—what Tom calls “three draws,” referring to instances involving individuals who, although trained, regrettably weren’t armed when confronted.
The principles of Combative Pistol form the cornerstone of the Rangemaster Instructor Development Course I attended, it focuses on the essentials that matter most: cultivating a fighting mindset, mastering practical marksmanship, and honing effective manipulations. Ultimately, achieving success in critical situations rests on a solid foundation of these fundamental skills. Tom's approach also emphasizes mental preparation, which is invaluable in any defensive encounter.
That being said, the Basic Defensive Handgun class I deliver, serves not only as an excellent starting point for anyone eager to learn about fighting with a handgun but also as a valuable refresher and practical skills assessment for those looking to stay sharp.
Now, regarding the term "Basic" in Basic Defensive Handgun: I chose this designation years ago, as I firmly believe that the skills encompassed in this course are foundational for anyone intending to protect themselves with a pistol.
My viewpoint is grounded in a thorough examination of numerous after-action reports from real defensive situations and conversations with individuals who have encountered such scenarios. I’m thrilled to share the essential skills you will gain from this class:
Fundamentals of Marksmanship:
Hitting your target with consistent accuracy is not just important—it's vital for two main reasons. In life-and-death situations, your ability to make precise shots can determine success or failure. Equally important is the disciplined control that ensures your shots remain on target, hitting only your intended subject.
Finding the Balance of Speed and Accuracy:
While handguns may not always be the most effective solution for neutralizing threats, their portability and the ability to carry them concealed make them a preferred choice for armed citizens. It’s important to recognize that effectively stopping a threat often requires multiple shots, especially when using handguns. However, handguns can be some of the most challenging fi****ms to shoot quickly and accurately. My goal is to equip you with the skills necessary for fast and precise shooting. Together, we will explore techniques to improve your abilities, and I will provide you with methods for continuous improvement even after our session ends.
How to Clear Stoppages:
Although we won't spend an extensive amount of time on this, I will prepare you to address malfunctions effectively so that if they arise during our session, you’ll know exactly what to do. You can also continue to hone these skills through dry-fire practice at home.
Proper Draw Technique:
Mastering an efficient draw technique is essential for quickly engaging a threat and maintaining control of your handgun. I teach the four-step thumb-pectoral index method, which balances speed and security during the draw. This technique is particularly effective for preserving your stance stability if someone attempts to take your handgun from you during a close-range attack.
Proper Reloading Technique:
Should you find your pistol empty, having the ability to reload quickly and effectively is key. We'll cover the essentials of reloading, allowing you to practice this vital skill during your dry-fire sessions.
Proper Use of Cover:
I will guide you on how to effectively utilize cover, minimizing your exposure while maximizing your safety in any situation.
Engaging Multiple Targets:
Recognizing that multiple attackers may be present is crucial. I will teach you to combine this skill with others to enhance your overall effectiveness in potentially chaotic scenarios.
Shooting While Moving:
If you find yourself caught in a critical incident without cover, moving toward safety is essential. You’ll learn how to shoot while on the move, alss a moving target is inherently harder to hit than a stationary one, making this a crucial skill for you to master.
I truly appreciate your commitment to boosting your personal safety and honing your skills with your defensive pistol! I'm excited to be part of your journey as we explore the best equipment together and build your confidence and expertise. If you have any questions or need more assistance, please feel free to reach out—I’m here for you!
