We have observed that nearly every measurable value of health can be placed on a continuum that ranges from sickness to wellness to fitness. Though tougher to measure, we would even add mental health to this observation.

Examples of such values include blood pressure, body-fat percentage, heart rate, and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, among others.

“The fittest will have all of their parameters or markers going in the direction of fit,” Seminar Staff Flowmaster and affiliate owner Jenn Hunter-Marshall (CF-L4) explains.

Done right, fitness provides a great margin of protection against the ravages of time and disease. Where you find otherwise, examine the fitness protocol, especially diet. Fitness is and should be “super-wellness.” Sickness, wellness, and fitness are measures of the same entity.

Shout put to Charles! Today is his first year anniversary at BTYFitnessGarner. Previously an avid CrossFitter, Charles came to us after a 6 year hiatus from any gym and a recent hip replacement surgery.

While many would use that as their reason to "stay on the couch", Charles made the determination to grt back after it, lose weight, and regain strength and mobility! His movement has improved tremendously and he continues with his weight loss. With well over a decade of experience, he's quick to give other members tips, especially on Olympic Lifts and is a valued member of our small community!

Congratulations to Meg, (Pictured center, mid goblet squat). Today is her 1 year anniversary as a member of BTY Fitness Garner. A full time high school math teacher, Meg balances a demanding work load, beach time, and hitting workouts. You can always tell when she's in the gym as her infectious laugh resonates throughout! Her youngest is starting as a freshman at UNCW, congrats on that as well! Keep it up, Meg!

The most well-known and iconic Hero WOD, Murph. Named after Navy Seal Lt. Michael Murphy, it is performed by CrossFit Gyms across the world on Memorial Day, as well as by others including numerous celebrities such as actors Chris Pratt and John Krasinski, Donald Trump Jr., Mark Zuckerberg, and many others. It honors his actions in Afghanistan when he and his team were ambushed by far numerically superior Taliban forces. As stated in his Medal of Honor citation: “Lt. Murphy unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his own life moved into the open, where he could gain a better position to transmit a call to get help for his men. . . . This deliberate and heroic act deprived him of cover and made him a target for the enemy. . . . He was shot in the back, causing him to drop the transmitter. Murphy picked it back up, completed the call and continued firing at the enemy who was closing in.” He died as a result of enemy fire.

The workout is a combo of mono-structural and gymnastics, with the Rx version adding weightlifting to every movement by way of a 20/14 # vest. Murphy, an avid CrossFit Athlete, came up with the workout while deployed, calling it "Body Armor". We do this workout on Memorial Day every year, not only to honor the sacrifice of Michael Murphy, but also that of every man and woman that has given their lives in service of others.

We will be doing Murph at our gym at 11am on Memorial Day. Along with our gym members we will welcome anyone else who would like to attend and participate. If this workout looks too daunting, we will provide many scaling options that will allow even a fitness beginner to succeed. For this workout, there will be no charge for anyone who is dropping in. A shout out to Susan Beach ! Today is her first year anniversary as a member of BTY Fitness Garner! She has made great progress since beginning, dedicating herself to getting into the gym at least 3 times weekly. One thing we have all seen - she has NO QUIT in her at all.

In her spare time, she is the bass player for Heart Brigade, a Heart tribute band that has to be heard to be believed!

Congrats, Susan, and here's looking forward to the next year.
