Shugyokan Dojo The Shugyokan is literally translated as "HOUSE OF AUSTERITY". It is the sacred place where the human spirit is polished.

The term "Shugyo" can be defined as training with such intense attitude that cultivates mastery and a perservering mind-set. We follow the principles and philosophy as set forth by the Founder of Matsubayashi Ryu , Shoshin Nagamine Sensei. He fervently believes that the dojo is the place where courage is fostered and superior human nature is bred through the ecstacy of sweating in hard work. The Shugyokan Dojo work diligently to provide our students with the best training to succeed physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually by providing a challenging curriculum to help students achieved whatever it may be in their karate training. Kosaku Matsumora (松茂良 興作, 1829 - 1898) was a Ryūkyūan karate master. He studied Tomari-te under Karyu Uku (aka Giko Uku) and Kishin Teruya. He also studied Jigen-ryu. Among Matsumora's students, who went on to influence new generations through students of their own, were Choki Motobu and Chotoku Kyan.

Matsumora is credited as the master who taught Chotoku Kyan the kata Chinto (his own version, not to be confused with Sokon Matsumura's version of the same kata). Another student of Matsumora, Maeda Pechin, is credited with teaching Kyan the kata Wanshu.

Nagamine, Shoshin Sensei trained under influential instructors Chōtoku Kyan Sensei and Chōki Motobu Sensei.

Keep Going
by Edgar Guest

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
And the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is q***r with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns.
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than it seems
To a faint and faltering man.
Often the struggler has given up when he
Might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are.
It may be near when it seems afar.
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit.
It's when things seem worst that
You musn't quit.
