Countless sagas have been written about the city of Galveston, located in the Gulf of Mexico and connected to the rest of Texas by a forever bridge and a state-run ferry service. Readers are fascinated by colorful tales of the thirty-two-mile-long, two-mile-wide barrier island an hour’s drive from Houston whose state has sworn allegiance to six flags under Spain, France, Mexico, the Texas Republic

, the Confederate States of America and the United States. Rugged “Born on the Island” Galvestonians (BOIs) would have visitors believe there should have been a seventh flag, that of the Independent Principality or Empire of Galveston. After all, there truly were BOIs who at one time in the island’s past had never ventured across the causeway bridge to the mainland of Texas. Galveston was the whole world to them, and they had no interest in horizons beyond.
