As I get older staying somewhat active is something that really helps mental health. I remember being in elementary school and having 10 minute runs in PE. I hated every second. I felt like I couldn't breathe. I felt like something was wrong with me because everyone else could run. Why not me? Every time I run as an almost 40-year old, I talk to the "little" me. The one who could have used some help and support. The one who needed to be told there was nothing wrong with them. And for some reason it's really healing. Also, I still don't love running. But, I love embracing parts of myself that are imperfect. Today on my run I felt like it was very tough. I kept asking myself, "Why does this feel so much harder than last time?" I realized that the last time I did this particular run, I walked all the recovery intervals. Today, I didn't walk at all.

It's so important to tell our young people that kindness and love towards oneself are the most important virtues to strive towards. Within that self love, you'll be able to embrace weak areas, and before you know it, you won't give up on yourself anymore. You'll run a little farther, a little faster, but most importantly, your motivation will be for the love of self.

Also, when you take the time to invest in yourself you'll be rewarded. You'll notice little joys have great value. Like this front yard strawberry patch I found today!
