Two years ago I was supposed to swim and SUP on a glacier. We got there and it wasn’t possible. Disappointing.
This year, different company: Alaska Helicopter Tours same dream. I decided to close that loop.
Booked it for Friday. Then it was cancelled, high winds. I was disappointed for about five minutes, then remembered I trust the flow and the universe is always rigged in my favor! I stayed flexible, I used my magic, we shifted plans, stayed one more night in Palmer, and got handed a perfect day instead with a last minute opportunity to for this once in a lifetime experience.
Then came the dry suit. It grips your neck like it’s trying to strangle you a little. I’m the most sensitive person alive about that kind of thing and I genuinely thought “I cannot do this.” Then I remembered: when I want something, nothing stops me. I breathed, calmed myself. Not even a suit trying to choke me on a Paddleboards will stop me!
Walked the glacier to warm up. Got in the water, David jumped, I floated. Wasn’t even cold, which felt like its own small miracle at 1 degree Celsius.
Then paddled straight into the glacier pool. No words. Just awe.
Helicopter in, helicopter out. Not of this world. Many Thanks to Hailee and Sarah our guides!
None of this, the trust, the flexibility, the willingness to stay in my body even when it’s uncomfortable, was always natural for me. It’s something I had to relearn.
