I beg your pardon. Newnan's Lake in Alachua County is more impaired than Lake Okeechobee. Direct Comparison (Water Quality Only)
Nutrients: Newnan's Lake has much higher concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus.
Trophic State: Both are eutrophic, but Newnan's is more consistently hypereutrophic.
Algal Blooms: Both suffer blooms, but Newnan’s poor water clarity and nutrient ratios make its water quality “worse” at the local level.
Okeechobee’s issue is that even “moderate” nutrient concentrations become catastrophic because of its size and the amount of water involved.
If you are asking strictly about water quality impairment (nutrient concentrations, eutrophication, algal growth, clarity), Newnans Lake is more impaired than Lake Okeechobee.

The study looks at federal chemical data for many of the nation's largest lakes in the U.S. to determine pollutant levels.

There seems to be some confusion on Google Maps about the connection between Prairie Creek and Newnan's Lake outflow. So we're updating you on that fact: “Newnans Lake drains on the south through Prairie Creek to Paynes Prairie and then via Camps Canal to River Styx into Orange Lake.”

Trail Closure for Newnans Lake Conservation Area 🚧🌧️

Due to recent heavy rains and high water flows, the two footbridges at the Hatchet Creek tract have sustained damage and are currently out of service. While portions of the white and red trails remain usable, access across the creek beds is limited until the bridges can be repaired.
