On January 12, 2020, I was in Palm Springs, California, for a School Nutrition Association trip. As part of a training exercise, we were paired with colleagues from all over the country, most of whom we’d never met before. When the session ended, we had a few free hours that afternoon, so I invited the people at my table to join me on a spontaneous road trip to Joshua Tree.
One guy took me up on the offer. We jumped in my rental car and headed an hour east. I drove while he Googled the coolest places to see in the park. Somewhere along the way, he FaceTimed his wife to let her know where he was going and who he was with… you know, just in case I turned out to be a serial killer. 😂
We spent the afternoon racing down trails, taking photos, and squeezing every possible adventure into the little time we had. It felt like we’d known each other for years instead of a few hours.
When we got back, we went our separate ways, and I’ve never seen him again. Still, it remains one of my favorite travel memories.
I’m grateful for strangers who are willing to jump into my rental car and say yes to an adventure. There have been quite a few over the years. 😂
