Swiveling, or using the same foot to push, change direction, and push quickly again is more efficient than stopping yourself with your lead foot before pushing to the back post when the puck changes direction like this.
Even though it feels slower, efficiency buys you time, and gives you a better chance of making this save. Shesterkin executes it perfectly here.
Compare this with our previous reel where Ersson stops himself with his lead foot before pushing, and isn’t able to get to the post in time to make the save.

A “swivel” in this situation is more efficient than stopping yourself and pushing again.
When Ersson pushes out with his left foot, rather than picking up his right knee and stopping himself, he could pick up his left knee again and push right away.
This is an incredibly difficult movement, but because it’s more efficient, it will get you to the back post more quickly, even if it feels slower.
Rotating towards the post will be incredibly difficult with this movement. To help, put your left foot more out in front of you, and turn your chin and hands to help you push towards the post, rather than just pushing laterally.

Try to maintain a little backwards flow on rush plays so you can make the save on the initial shot and have a chance to get back door if the puck goes there.

Poking while pushing on a stuff or pass across allows you to potentially disrupt the play while simultaneously moving across the net if you miss the poke or they stickhandle around you.

Try to manage your squareness in the RVH depending on where their players are. If there is a back door play available, you want to be more parallel to the goal line, so you can use the post to push directly across.

It always pays off to be set when a player is shooting or passing back door. Even if you’re not really far out, being set allows you to read the puck and release well and react accordingly.

This July we are hosting three camps. A 1 day Saturday camp in Columbus, Georgia, a 3 day weekday camp in Pelham, Alabama and a 3 day weekend camp in Jacksonville, Florida.

Camp Dates:
Alabama Camp July 27th-29th
Florida Camp July 31st-August 2nd (Target date, will confirm)
Georgia Camp July 25th (Target Date)
