Remember that video I posted a while back that hinted about something Halo? Well here is a bit more : )
About:
- This is the Halo Reach ODST Chest Plate that was started at the very end of February 2015 and finishing in late March 2015. The design came from Bungie's character model of the Halo Reach ODST. While not everything matches up with the Halo Reach in game character model, I took some creativity to make it "even better". The main difference would be the strap loops on the "wings" of the chest plate. I decided they'd look better if I simplified it to match with the overall design. Once I had the general design in mind I began the build. I started the chest piece not knowing how I would pull it off as it had very specific curves and angles to be achieved. To get these curves, I decided to cut strips of mdf board at an angle and glue them together along that angle. It was rough and jagged but once I took sand paper to it I achieved a nice curve. Then to get the angles that drop down to the "wings" I used a method I like to call the "step". For the Step, I literally created a step of the next piece that needs the angle. Once I have that, I glue it to the back of the first piece and add bondo. The bondo fills the step and allows me to create the angle desired. Rinse and repeat and I have the base shape of the chest plate. To make the piece even cleaner and more detailed, I took PVC sheets and masked them over the base shape. Then do some clean up and I have a finished piece!
- Fot this project I used the following materials: MDF Board, Bondo, PVC, Screws, and various adhesives. As for the tools used: Table Saw, Dremel Tool, Sand paper
-So I imagine some of you may be asking why I am using these materials to make this piece as I could have used pepakura or foam as my medium. For me, I prefer hard materials that are durable and can be sculpted. These materials allow me to shave away the bumps and fill in the gaps as I went along. Ultimately creating a cleaner piece. I also didn't want to take someone else's plans for the build. I wanted to make this for myself with my own knowledge of creating. And that being said, I am so much prouder of the work I have done than if I had gone an alternate route.
If I could do this again:
- I would have taken more time into the symmetry of the piece. While I thought I was spot on most of the time, I ended up just being a tad off. It was frustrating but I know what I did wrong and how to overcome that. I would also liked to have made some angles a bit more "dramatic" for show the shape better. But, because of my time constraint, I have this and I am happy : )
