CSUF Kung Fu Club

CSUF Kung Fu Club The Kung Fu Club teaches Chinese martial arts to CSUF and the public. We emphasize self-defense, dis The name means "Ted Lai's Way of Fighting."

The Kung Fu Club teaches a Southern Shaolin style called Lai Chung Chuan Fa. It merges elements from Hung Gar, Choy Li Fut, and several other styles. Our emphasis is on three important areas: practical self-defense; traditional Chinese forms; and personal improvement. Founded in 1971, the CSUF Kung Fu Club is one of the oldest martial arts organizations on campus. For decades our style was simply

called "Kung Fu," because martial arts weren't mainstream back then and because it was made up of several kung fu systems. More recently, the senior instructors named our style Lai Chung Chuan Fa as a tribute to our late founder, Master Ted Lai. We are a not-for-profit group and welcome members of the public.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Sifu Patrick Vuong will be co-teaching an upcoming street self-defense seminar in Fullerton on October 19-20.

The Worst-Case Defense Seminar will focus on the two scariest situations imaginable: facing a gun threat and dealing with a knife ambush.

Seminar Takeaways include:

1. Learn How Armed Thugs Actually Attack: Weโ€™ll analyze crime statistics and break down footage of real-life attacks so you understand the reality of violence in todayโ€™s world.

2. Understand Gun Threats Versus Gun Attacks: Distinguishing between the two could make all the difference between getting home in one piece or resting in peace.

3. Discover a Practical Method to Handling a Gun Threat: Just one simple concept that could save your life, whether youโ€™re unarmed or unable to draw your own self-defense weapon in time.

4. Use This Counterintuitive Move to Stop a Knife Ambush: Doing this unexpected technique could stop a stabbing attempt in its tracks.

5. Unleash Your Inner Warrior (Safely in a Fun Way): Practicing techniques in the air or against a compliant partner will get you only so far. Undergo pressure-testing through safe, fun, and effective drills.

With follow-home robberies and unprovoked assaults dominating the news these days, it only makes sense to know how to deal with an armed attacker.

It's with a heavy heart that we report on the passing of Romin Rajan, a longtime member and former Student President of the Kung Fu Club.

He originally joined the KFC in the mid 2010s as a CSUF undergrad, remaining a dedicated practitioner during his time on campus. Later, as a graduate student earning his master's degree in Human Communication Studies, Romin served in various roles within the club before being elected as the Student President.

During this time, he was also the assistant instructor of the Martial Arts Fitness Class, which was founded and taught by Sifu Patrick Vuong, at the CSUF Student Recreation Center. This hybrid class combined striking drills from Kung Fu, Karate, and Kickboxing โ€” which gelled perfectly with Romin's eclectic tastes in training.

Outside of the gym, he was a specialist in communication, having competed and later coached for the CSUF's Debate Team. Romin also co-founded with Jay-Ram Rajendra an internet program called Kick-It Radio (a double nod to both the hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest and their shared love for martial arts).

In recent years, he became a mixologist and eventually became the bar manager at Videre Rooftop Bar & Restaurant in Los Angeles, where he established much of the drink menu and earned rave reviews from bloggers and local newspapers.

Known for his sharp intellect, eccentric style of dress, and easygoing personality, Romin could wax philosophic about everything from dystopian futures to street tacos.

He passed away in December of 2023 but it was not known publicly until more recently. If you'd like to reunite as a club to celebrate his life, please comment below with ideas or suggestions.

Rest in power, friend.

This in-person event will cover a range of practical personal protection topics, including:

* Learn how to spot the warning signs of an urban assault
* Know how to stop a suckerpunch before it can knock you to the ground
* Become dangerous if you do end up on your butt
* Practice how to get to your feet quickly (and safely) so you can flee or fight back without getting your teeth knocked out
* And learn how to end a fight with our five primary strikes.

Come join us for safe, fun, and effective street self-defense.

With violent crime, Asian hate, and unprovoked attacks skyrocketing over the past two years, we must become better prepared and more capable because, let's face it, criminals are only becoming more bold and brazen.

That's why Sifu Patrick will be co-teaching something few instructors offer: a comprehensive program that integrates UNARMED DEFENSE against an edged weapon and ARMED DEFENSE with an edged weapon.

Hence, the name of the event is "Knife Defense Squared" or "Knife Defense to the power of 2."

Please spread the word so more people get the training they need. Oh, and if you're reading this, that means you're eligible for our friends-and-family discount. Just send us a DM for details.

One of Sifu Patrick's favorite myths to bust is the fallacy that you can pull out your knife in time as someone is ALREADY attacking you. Unless you're John Wick or Jason Bourne, you're most likely going to lose this deadly race if you're REACTING to someone else's ACT of harming you.

So, what should you do? Use the weapons you were born with!
