“She was an old sow, estimated to be around thirty years old and over 200 pounds. Her teeth were worn down from a lifetime in the mountains. She was blind in both eyes. Battle scars covered her body. She had lived an incredible life.

The experience reinforced something I continue to appreciate about hunting: the deep respect it creates for the animals, the landscape, and the responsibility that comes with participating in conservation. This wasn’t just about harvesting an animal. It was about being part of a much larger story and gaining a deeper appreciation for the life that animal had lived.

But as meaningful as the bear was, it wasn’t the highlight of the trip.

The highlight was my dad.”

Spent the morning with the banding geese for conservation and research.

While some may see banding as intrusive, it’s one of the most effective tools wildlife biologists have to understand migration routes, breeding success, survival rates, and overall population health. Every band has a unique number, and when those bands are later reported when the goose has died, the data helps the Division of Wildlife Resources make informed decisions that protect habitats and sustain healthy populations.

The work being done by Utah DWR is critical to the future of our wildlife. Much of this conservation work is funded directly by hunters through licenses, permits, and taxes. Your hunting dollars don’t just support hunting opportunities, they help preserve wildlife and wild places for generations to come.
