Frostburg Rifle Range

Frostburg Rifle Range Get out and shoot! This is the official page for Frostburg Rifle Range info. Metal target frames with rubber backing are provided.

The range features a pavillion with 3 shooting benches where shots can be made to 100 yards, and 1 bench where shots can be made to 200 yards. A 25 yard pistol range is also available with a covered pavilion area and tables for you to place your gun cases, spare targets, and other equipment while shooting. Shooters should bring their own paper tartets, hearing protection, and eye protection. Please pick up any used targets/trash and place in the trash cans provided.

The Frostburg Rifle/Pistol Range will not be available for members to use on Sunday, March 29th in the afternoon. The range will be used by a hunter training group.

Get your muzzleloaders ready! Join us on April 19th, the anniversary of the first shots of the American Revolution, for our upcoming Stars, Stripes, and Smoke Blackpowder Challenge at the Frostburg Rifle Range! This competition is open to all ages, and women are strongly encouraged to participate. The contest is sponsored by the City of Frostburg and the Big Savage Sportsmen's Club with prizes sponsored by the Frostburg 250th Committee.

It's free to enter! There will be three competition categories, Traditional, In-line, and Flintlock. Order of categories to be determined but start times are as follows:

10:00 AM
12:00 PM
2:00 PM

Each category will award the following cash prizes:
1st Place – $250
2nd Place – $125
3rd Place – $75

Please note: Shooters must supply their own powder, ammunition, as well as hearing and eye protection.

Registration deadline is Friday, April 10th. The event is limited to 25 contestants per category, so be sure to register early to secure your spot.

Q: When are you open?
A: Generally the 1st and 3rd weekends of the month April-November from 11am-4pm (with a few exceptions). Schedule for the year will be a pinned post.

Q: What is the fee?
A: $5/shooter/day

Q: How many stations are there?
A: Rifle range - 5 benches under pavilion (one bench up to 200 yds, 4 benches up to 100 yds)
Pistol range - 5 stations under pavilion up to 25 yards

Q: Is there a Range Safety Officer?
A: Yes, an RSO will be on duty when the range is open to the public.

Q: Are kids allowed?
A: Yes! Must have parent/guardian present & sign release form.

Q: Are shotguns allowed?
A: Yes, with the following limitations:
Must be used on the rifle range only (not at the pistol range)
Must be fired from the bench at standing targets (no clay birds or other moving targets)
Must bring your own cardboard backing - our target frames have rubber backing which is quickly destroyed by shotguns. Please bring extra zip ties with you - remove the rubber backing from a frame, install your cardboard and replace the rubber when you are finished.
We do have moveable target frames, so you can adjust the distance from the bench as needed.

Q: Is there a membership to use the range outside of public days?
A: Yes, members of Big Savage Sportsmen Club and Piney Mtn Sportsmen Association may use the range on non-public days. Please message the page for membership/contact info for the clubs.

FSU police will be using the range for their annual qualification on the following: August 6th, 13th, and 21st from 8 am to 3 pm.
It will not be available to members during these days and times. Sorry for any inconvenience.

JULY 19th: SECOND HANDGUN DAY OF SUMMER AT FROSTBURG RIFLE/PISTOL RANGE
The Big Savage Sportsmen’s Club is hosting their second “Handgun Day” of the summer at the Frostburg Rifle/Pistol Range” on Saturday, July 19th. The event is free and open to the public, and is designed for those citizens who are thinking about handgun ownership, or who own a handgun but don’t feel comfortable shooting it.
This event will provide the opportunity to shoot a variety of types and calibers made available by local gun dealer Queen City Armory, of Cumberland, MD. Shooters may also bring their own handgun (along with their own ammunition), which must be unloaded prior to entry. Those attending under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent, or legal guardian.
Participants must attend a short workshop which will be provided throughout the day to explain laws regarding transport, storage and safety, responsibilities of handgun ownership, and will demonstrate grip, aiming and shooting techniques. Live firing will follow each workshop and each shooter will be supervised by a NRA certified Range Safety Officer of Big Savage Sportsmen’s Club or Piney Mt. Sportsmen’s Association.
The range is located off of Clifton Terrace, Rt. 40, west of Frostburg, across the road from Kemp Drive. Participants may attend any time between 10a.m. and 3p.m. The range will close at 4pm. The Club has hosted a Handgun Day each spring and fall since 2010. The event will be held rain or shine, as the shooting stations are all covered and protected from the weather.
