Parts of Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course got a haircut today.

It's been three years since the first and still only public disc golf course in Allegany County opened up for play.

The work — ever needed — continues.

Today, a volunteer sprayed for poison ivy (focused on the No. 1 fairway), picked up some trash and glass along the course (then played a round and saw more that will be picked up tomorrow).

Animal f***s removed from a certain spot (thanks irresponsible pet owner), and a bunch of rocks were removed (thank you wagons for making that easier).

If tomorrow (Tuesday, May 12) goes well (smooth), No. 7 will become an elevated basket. In addition, portions of fairways 5 and 6 will be mowed.

A significant and sincere "THANK YOU" to members of the Frostburg State University Swimming men's and women's teams today as they helped spruce up Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course this morning during the annual Beautify the Burg event.

Folks, these young student-athletes and community all-stars completed, to perfection, whatever task was put in front of them — with light hearts and friendly smiles.

Kyle, Genna, Jenna, Bradin, Nigel, Ashley, Riley, Sean F., Bliss, Kay, Sante and Sean O. helped:

* Clean up the areas left and right of the No. 8 fairway
* Distribute and spread mulch on all nine tee areas
* Picked up a whole lot of glass and trash, and
* Moved dozens of landscaping bricks to the No. 7 green as work continues to make that an elevated basket (they pulled out math for that one, and the Allegany County Disc Golf Club rep was glad it was them doing math and not him).

Each and every volunteer this morning is an awesome person in his or her own right. Thanks for doing what you do.

A giant "thank you" to Brian and his crew with the City of Frostburg Parks and Rec Department, as well as the Frostburg State University Office of Civic Engagement, for working so hard to help make this happen each and every year.

The first and only public disc golf course in Allegany County is a better place today because of the efforts of each and every one of you.

The Allegany County Disc Golf Club and volunteers from Frostburg State University will once again help with course work and course clean-up at Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course during the 24th annual Beautify the Burg event.

This year the event will be from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 2.

Volunteers are encouraged to wear close-toed shoes along with comfortable clothing that will allow freedom of movement. Volunteers are also encouraged to bring work gloves if they have them.

One step back, two steps forward.

Pardon our temporary mess at the tee area of hole 4 at Hoffman Park. The rocks there are being removed, and we'll pack in some fresh dirt soon (hopefully in the next few days).

Gotta get a little dirty and messy before the tee area is cleaned up nice and neat.

In the meantime, please exercise caution while playing hole 4.

The warm weather has us thinking ... COURSE WORK!

Our motivation today was catapulted into top gear by two events:

* A donation by Dottie, of Grahamtown, of dozens of edging bricks; and

* A new mower provided by the City of Frostburg.

Wahoo to both!

Today was spent moving nearly four dozen edging bricks to Hoffman Park, and more will be moved tomorrow.

It's not time to mow (yet), so today time was taken to remove some annoying rocks on the tee areas of tees 4 and 5. Dirt will be put into the holes on left by the rocks on 4 tomorrow (Tuesday); 5 is good to go.

It seems the first and only public disc golf course will be blanketed with snow this weekend (along with the rest of the Mid-Atlantic).

However, that doesn't mean the throwing ends. Not even close. Both the Allegany County Disc Golf Club and Western Maryland Disc Golf have events scheduled at Hoffman Park this month.

Week 4 of the ACDGC's Winter Flex League runs from Monday, Jan. 26 through Sunday, Feb. 1. Times each day will be posted on the ACDGC page.

Then, on Saturday, Jan. 31, WMDG will host Winter Doubles League at 2 p.m.

There are some great tips for playing disc golf in the snow. This video covers some tips to prepare both you and your equipment for Winter play.

Oh, and the shoveling at Hoffman Park will begin either Sunday evening or Monday morning. If you're inclined and able to help, please call/text 301-338-4533 or email [email protected]. Many hands (and shovels) will part the light, fluffy snow even faster.

Our areas of priority (in this order) are: tee pads, greens, paths from basket to the next tee, then skinny paths down each fairway.

Three years ago today, the City of Frostburg Mayor and City Council followed the Recreation and Parks Commission's recommendation to approve the design and installation of the Hoffman Park Disc Golf Course in Frostburg, Maryland.

As of today, it remains the first and only public disc golf course in Allegany County.

The course has hosted hundreds of players over dozens of events since it opened for play on May 14, 2023.

A heartfelt "thank you" to the City of Frostburg Parks and Rec crew, members of which responded to the Allegany County Disc Golf Club's request for assistance with a fallen tree over the No. 9 fairway.

After nearly a week of strong winds (gusting upwards of 50 mph), this one was simply a bit too big for club volunteers to address independently.

While the tree added an extra (and fun) obstacle during the club's flex league competition, the tree was a safety issue and, shortly after an email was sent asking for help, the tree was removed.
