Respect. Gratitude. Legacy. 🥋

There’s something special about standing beside the person who helped shape the way you understand Jiu Jitsu.

Professor Carlos Machado has been James Boecker’s Jiu Jitsu professor, mentor, and an important influence on the principles James has carried forward into RockStar Martial Arts.

The technique matters. The knowledge matters. But what gets passed from professor to student goes far beyond what happens on the mat. It’s the respect for the art, the responsibility to teach it the right way, and the understanding that Jiu Jitsu has the power to develop people—not just practitioners.

That influence has become part of RockStar’s DNA and, through our instructors and students, continues into the next generation.

🥋 What did you fail at this week?

It might sound like a strange question to ask your kids.

But it could be one of the most powerful.

Research suggests that one of the biggest influences on how kids learn to handle failure is how their parents react when something goes wrong.

When we panic, rush in, or immediately try to make everything better, kids can learn that failure is something to fear.

But when we get curious?

Failure becomes information.

Spanx founder Sara Blakely has shared that growing up, her dad would ask at the dinner table:

“What did you fail at this week?”

If the kids had an answer, he celebrated it—because failure meant they were trying.

So here’s a RockStar Family Challenge for this week:

At dinner, have everyone share one thing that didn’t go as planned.

Parents go first.

Then ask:

Was it a Stretch Mistake because I tried something hard?

An Aha-Moment Mistake because I learned something I didn’t know?

Or a Sloppy Mistake because I knew what to do but lost focus?

Then finish with:

“What will I do differently next time?”

Martial arts isn’t about teaching kids to never fail.

It’s about helping them develop the confidence to try, learn, adjust, and try again. 🥋

I still remember watching one little boy struggle through class.

Some of the things I do as your child’s instructor sound harsh out of context.
I let kids fail. I don’t make everything fair. I expect them to look me in the eye. I don’t accept “I can’t.” I ask them to do things that make them nervous. And I don’t hand out belts just for showing up.
Here’s the part that occasionally makes a parent furious: I think kids need more adults who love them enough to let them struggle. Not humiliation. Not screaming. Challenge and support.
Because the goal was never to make martial arts easy for your child. It’s to help your child become someone who can do hard things.

A mom sat across from me a few years into owning my first school, close to tears. Her son was getting picked on at school. She had done everything the parenting books told her to do. She talked to him about his worth. She met with his teachers. She told him every single morning to stand tall and stand up for himself.
And every afternoon he came home a little smaller.

She looked at me and said, “I don’t know what else to do.” I could feel how much she loved him and how helpless she felt, because I had felt that same helplessness years earlier as a classroom teacher, watching good kids shrink and not knowing how to stop it.

That’s when I learned something that changed how we run every class we teach.

Confidence is not a conversation. It’s a receipt.

A kid doesn’t feel brave because you tell him he’s brave. He feels brave because he tried something hard, in front of people, and came out the other side. Then he did it again. Every rep on the mat becomes proof he can point to when the doubt shows up.
