How To Hit The Kimura From Closed Guard

Want a tighter Kimura from closed guard? 🥋 The difference is in the details. Control the wrist, come up to your elbow, lock your Kimura grip, and use that “chicken wing” pinch to break your opponent’s posture. Then create the right angle, control the arm, and finish without staying flat underneath them. Small adjustments can make a big difference when attacking this classic Jiu Jitsu submission.

Save this technique and try it during your next training session.

How to Beat The Koala Guard With a Rolling Kimura

Having trouble getting past the Koala Guard? This rolling Kimura gives you a powerful way to turn your opponent’s leg control into an attack. When you can’t simply step around the guard, use pressure to create a reaction, dive over the head to secure the Kimura grip, and stay tight as you hip out and turn onto your side. From there, use your legs and positioning to come up, control your opponent, isolate the arm, and work toward the Kimura finish. It’s a great example of turning a difficult guard position into an attacking opportunity.

4 Signs You’re Wasting Energy During Sparring

Are you wasting energy every time you spar? In Jiu Jitsu, working harder doesn’t always mean you’re working smarter. Holding grips that aren’t accomplishing anything, holding your breath, constantly squeezing, and exploding into moves without improving your position can burn through your energy fast. Learning when to relax, when to apply pressure, and when to explode can help you become a more efficient grappler and conserve energy for when you actually need it. Next time you roll, pay attention to where your energy is going.

How to Escape a Headlock in a Fight

What should you do if someone puts you in a headlock and pins you against a wall? In this Jiu Jitsu self-defense technique, Professor Matthew Jones demonstrates a practical way to escape the position using leverage and positioning instead of trying to overpower your opponent.

When the attacker has a wide base and is leaning into the wall, simply trying to lift the leg can be difficult. Professor Jones shows how a small bump can shift the attacker’s weight and make the leg easier to secure. From there, he steps back, breaks the attacker’s balance, takes them to the ground and transitions into a dominant position.

Turning a Failed Back Take From Guard Into an Armbar

A failed back take attempt from guard doesn’t mean the attack is over. In this Jiu Jitsu technique, Professor Matthew Jones shows how to turn your opponent’s reaction to a failed back take into an armbar from guard.

Starting with an arm drag, he creates space and looks to take the back. When his opponent repeatedly scoots in to close that space, he uses that movement against him. By timing the pull as the opponent moves forward, bringing the knee up and placing the foot in the armpit, he creates the angle needed to attack the armbar. It’s a great example of using your opponent’s reaction to transition from one submission opportunity to another.

How To Take The Back From De La Riva Guard

Learn how to take the back from De La Riva guard against a standing opponent. In this step-by-step Jiu Jitsu technique, Professor Matthew Jones demonstrates how to use a deep De La Riva hook to create movement, transition to butterfly hooks, and use your opponent’s weight to sit up and attack the back.

Watch how he establishes the seat belt, controls the position, and creates the opening needed to secure both hooks for full back control and four points in competition. This is a great BJJ technique for turning De La Riva guard into a dominant scoring position.

How To Do a Spider Guard to X-Guard Sweep

Learn how to sweep a standing opponent by transitioning from spider guard to X-guard. In this BJJ technique breakdown, Professor Matthew Jones demonstrates how to use sleeve control and tension from spider guard to force your opponent to step forward and bring their leg within reach.

From there, he shows how to scoop underneath the leg, establish X-guard, and use foot placement behind the ankle to off-balance your opponent and complete the sweep. He also explains how to maintain pressure after the opponent falls, prevent the scramble, and quickly come up into a strong top position.

Try this spider guard to X-guard transition during your next BJJ training session.
