The History Tour has all brand new sign markers! Larger and easier to read and less likely to collect moisture and grime. Our first version was cool and funky with hemlock frames but weren’t lasting in high sunshine locations. New signs are a different process and should last much better. If you like the history of settlement and life in days-gone-by you will enjoy walking around our small town exploring its history and enjoying its scenery and people. https://friendsville.org

Approx 1936-38 Red Jenkins and 'Charlie Bill' Welch were business neighbors on Morris Avenue (downriver from Maple Street 2nd and 3rd building from corner). Red had the bar and restaurant/barber shop beside the shoemakers shop in the Lowdermilk home on Morris Avenue. Politics back-in-the-day was spirited in the local taverns and meeting places but neighbors always came together in the end. In this picture Red is drinking a beer and being wheeled down Maple Street by Charlie Bill who lost the bet on who would be elected Governor. Jim Lininger Senior is driving and Mr. Bowers the cobbler is on the drum. A nice example that we can even have fun with politics and always stay friends.

Better late than never. Found this picture of Ina Hicks when she was a very little girl in Friendsville. Ina is one of Friendsville's most knowledgable keepers of our history and town stories. She celeberated her 90th birthday last May and is still going strong. Looking for 100!

The corner of Morris Avenue and Maple Street. Pictured the Cuppett House, Hotel and General Merchandise. The ornate gingerbread details on the building (which still stands) and the Band on the front wooden sidewalk date this about 1890-1900 during during Friendsville's boom time as a logging and commerce center. Farm's dotted the surrounding areas and salesmen needed a place to say as they serviced the numerous small stores out in the countryside. Salesmen could rent buggies from the livery stable across the river. Local lodging was also used by employees of the rail road and various logging enterprises around the town.

Ruth and Ode Frantz lived on the corner of Maple and Morris for many years. Their home is still standing and is pictured behind Ruth on the right. Here Ruth is pictured on the old bridge. Not sure of the date. Anyone have any idea?

This is not really about Friendsville history but it is an interesting photo of Albert Einsten sailing at Deep Creek Lake around 1943.

This Memorial Day weekend might just be the perfect time to walk the history tour. Lots of things happening from the 5K-3K Kendall Trail Race to the Makers Market and lots of water in the river for the rafters and kayakers. Maps for the tour are available at the S&S Market and other businesses and the town parking lot kiosk. Stay healthy, walk a little and learn about our interesting little towns history. http://visitfriendsville.org
