Why is Jiu-Jitsu so often treated like the “extra”… instead of the priority?
In most other youth sports, multiple practices a week, weekend games, tournaments, travel, private coaching, and year-round commitments are completely normal. No one questions it.
But when it comes to Jiu-Jitsu, it’s often viewed differently.“No field.”“No big weekend game.”“No seasons.”“Harder to spectate.”
So from the outside, many people see it as just a hobby… a class… maybe a little self-defense.
But are parents realizing what Jiu-Jitsu actually is becoming for this generation?
This is no longer some small niche activity. Competitive Jiu-Jitsu is exploding worldwide. Organizations like CJI, ADCC, and even the UFC are helping push grappling into the mainstream, while more money, sponsorships, opportunities, and visibility are flowing into the sport every year.
And beyond competition, Jiu-Jitsu develops something many sports struggle to teach consistently:discipline, resilience, composure under pressure, accountability, confidence, problem solving, and the ability to keep going when things get hard.
So we’re curious…Is Jiu-Jitsu still viewed as “extra” because people don’t fully understand how demanding and legitimate the sport really is? Let us know your thoughts in the comments 👇
