Velvet is off and things are starting to get spicy already! We’ve heard the first bugles, seen bulls scent checking cows already and have also witnessed some sparring…IT’S GO TIME FOLKS!!!

This past weekend the Elk Country Archery Challenge was held on the grounds of the Elk Country Visitors Center in Benezette. There is a 30 target 3D course to shoot as well as a running and 100yd target novelty shoots open to the public. Also there is an interesting twist with this event as there are several Cross-fit style competitions meshed with the shoot.

Theres a timed hill climb event with a weighted pack as well as a head to head weighted sled drag competition as well. Theres various obstacles along the way and you are timed through the events. To compete in these events you had to sign up prior to the event.

We were once again happy to partner with the good folks down at Centre Boot Company to donate a pair of Crispi boots of choice to the winner of the 100yd shoot. Congratulations to Chris Chiappini from Grove City on the new boots!

Also we had two ECO guides, Keith Stevens and John Cofer, compete this year in the event. Keith shot traditional and took second place overall in his division! Congratulations fellas and thanks for representing ECO out on the course!

Quite the capture from one of the guys the other day!

There was a small herd of cows and calves grazing and loafing in the tall grass and sunshine in front of one of the guys cameras. Eventually the cows laid the calves down in the tall grass while the cows retreated to the timber.

Only a few minutes later a coyote was on scene harassing the calfs! Best we can tell he was unsuccessful but he gave it the ‘ol college try!

There were 3 calfs bedded here when the may-lay commenced. You can see two up and running but the third relied on its natural instinct to stay put and the coyote ran right past it. In the video pay attention to area just to the left and a little above the yellow patch of grass in the middle of the frame…you may have to zoom in to see the calf pick its head up and peek around at one point. Also you can see momma come charging in to the rescue near the end of the clip as she heard the calfs distress calls.

Aside from the general awesomeness of getting to hunt elk every year in our home state, another amazing part of the process is getting to meet all the folks with tags in pocket as well as their family members and guests every year. This is truly another incredible part of this PA elk game that is often overlooked.

From the blue collar construction worker to the lawyer or engineer…or the inexperienced newbie hunter to the grizzled old mountain men that show us a thing or two…or even the professional hunter. We thought we’d seen most all of it but as per usual theres always something more out there as a first…

We are excited this year to hunt with former Pittsburgh Steeler and co-owner of HuntVault Tony Orlandini for a 308 bull in the November season! We can tell already that its gonna be a great hunt and adventure with Tony and we can’t wait!

Plus he’s already started sending goodies 😂😂😂

Rattlesnakes are a common occurrence in elk country and Its an accepted fact that we’ll have encounters throughout our summer time scouting missions and early fall hunting forays. Theres multiple products out there to help mitigate the snake danger…from specialized snake boots, snake gaiters and even snake chaps but I wonder if anyone out there makes “snake sleeves”? 😳🤔😅

A recent camera maintenance trip by one of the gang on some private property we have access too had this unique find the other day.
