It is with great sadness that we learned about the passing of our dear friend Sensei Bernardo Mercado. He was an incredible supporter of our dojo. Sensei Bernardo graciously allowed our dojo to rent space in his building when we were in need of a home. With his support, as well as Sensei Harry and Sensei Al at Fremont Shotokan, our dojo was allowed to grow and thrive. Sensei Bernardo was one of our greatest cheerleaders and promoters. It is fair to say that our dojo would not have developed if not for his support and help.
Sensei Bernardo promoted everyone's events and encouraged everyone to do the same. He worked hard to promote the martial arts in the Bay Area. He was a true karate-ka and a true sensei. He was also a kind, friendly, humble and caring individual who was an inspiration to our dojo.
With this loss, the karate world lost a great example of what we could be, the Bay Area lost a true martial arts legend, and our dojo lost an amazing friend. The world also lost a really good person.
Sensei Bernardo will always be remembered by our dojo, and he will always have a place of honor with us. Our deepest condolences to his family, friends, instructors, students and dojo.
