Teaching and learning are opposite faces of the same coin: We all want to learn as efficiently as possible. There is a definite link between giving and receiving information. When I began studying Jiu Jitsu I was already twenty eight years old and with no serious background in grappling sports - seemingly far too late to ever become really effective. I was always looking for ways to progress a little faster. One of the more effective methods I employed was to teach things I’d learned back to myself - a common approach in academia. At the end of class I’d grab a partner and teach back the moves we’d learned, looking to isolate and emphasize the most pertinent points and details that made the move effective. When I took notes I never tried to recount everything I’d been told, but rather to prioritize information into the most important parts and where it fit into a larger context. What problem was it trying to solve? Could the principles applied in this solution find relevance elsewhere? Could anything be changed to make further improve this solution? What were the underlying principles that made the move effective? Why was the move important? How did it fit into a larger network of moves to achieve a given goal? What kind of training scenario would facilitate this information becoming a reliable skill? When you can teach yourself along these lines the learning process becomes far more interesting and beneficial and learning and teaching become very close in spirit.

Memorial Day 2026

Today, let us all remember our Nations Warriors that fought and gave the ultimate sacrifice so that we could live lives of purpose, honor and celebration. To them, we were worth it!

Have a blessed Memorial Day with family and friends all!

This is Leo…he came into our Little Monsters program last year and it has been inspiring to watch Jiu Jitsu change his life! πŸ™πŸ½

Watching his mom and dad soaking in his growth and achievement has been as inspiring. πŸ‘ŠπŸ½

He had a big day this week being promoted to Gray/White. It is a big deal, as he has worked hard and met/set the standard of what a young martial artist looks like! πŸ€™πŸ½

Want life change in your child’s life? Register for a Free Class and come see us! Try Jiu Jitsu, and if not, we hope you find something that they do, that challenges them (without letting them quit) and that’s where life change really happens! πŸ†πŸ’―

Always good stuff from Professor John! πŸ™πŸ½πŸ€™πŸ½πŸ‘ŠπŸ½

Good times bad times: Quite often you’ll experience a workout that rises quite far above your normal performance level. On the flip side, on roughly the same number of occasions you’ll experience a workout that dips far below your normal performance level. This is quite normal. Performance outcome is mostly determined by relative skill level, but there are some irreducibly random aspects to any single performance and sometimes these can have a big positive or negative impact on that particular performance. This is why it’s wise to never have an overly euphoric reaction to an unusually good performance, nor to have an overly despondent reaction to an unusually bad performance. Once that performance is over you’re very likely to revert back to something closer to your average performance level its natural to overreact to sudden positive or negative gains in a single performance - but what really indicates your level is the sum of a collection of your performances over time. The Stoics were wise to praise those who never became unreasonably happy at good fortune nor unreasonably miserable in bad fortune - measure yourself across time rather than single events - that’s the real you.

A great night training together with our friends from πŸ€™πŸ½

Sharing the mats and encouraging one another is the essence of what we do, and to have academy relationships that want the best for each other is an invaluable part of the whole mission! πŸ™πŸ½

Coach Ethan and his crew are awesome martial artists and solid people that we call friends! πŸ‘ŠπŸ½
