Wayne Simmonds

Wayne Simmonds was born on August 26, 1988 in Scarborough Ontario Canada. He is known by teammates and fans as his nickname “Wayne Train” because of his physical style of play. Simmonds was selected with the 61st pick in the 2007 NHL entry draft by the Los Angeles Kings, where he soon became a fan favorite because of his exceptional work ethic, a trait instilled in Simmonds by his parents. In 909 NHL contests, Simmonds has put up an impressive 499 points, making the NHL all star team in 2017. Simmonds was also the recipient of the Mark Messier Leadership Award in the 2018-2019 season, given to the NHL player who displays a positive example through on-ice performance, motivation of team members and a dedication to community activities and charitable causes.

Kevin Weekes

Kevin Weekes was born on April 4, 1975 in Toronto, Ontario. Weekes was selected with the 41st selection in the 1993 NHL entry draft by the Florida Panthers. In 348 NHL games with the Panthers, Canucks, Lightning, Islanders, Hurricanes, Rangers, and Devils, Weekes has a .903% save percentage, and a 2.88 goals against average. Weekes announced his retirement from playing on September 27, 2009, however, shortly after he made history becoming the first Black analyst in hockey. Weekes is a colour commentator for the NHL network, and Hockey Night in Canada, and was named to The Hockey News top 40 under 40 most powerful people in Ice hockey.

Quinton Byfield

Quinton Byfield was born on August 19, 2002 in Newmarket, Ontario. The 6’4” center was drafted with the number 2 pick in the 2020 draft, becoming the highest drafted mixed race player in NHL history. Byfield was the first overall pick in the 2018 OHL draft, and won both the OHL and CHL rookie of the year awards. In 109 career OHL games, Byfield has 61 goals and 82 assists for 143 points. Byfield has also represented Canada internationally, winning a gold medal in the 2020 World Junior Championships, and Silver in the 2021 tournament. Byfield has a bright future ahead of him, and is an inspiration to minority hockey players everywhere.

Pernell-Karl Sylvester "P. K." Subban was born on May 13, 1989 in Toronto, Ontario. Subban, a defenseman, was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens with pick 43 in the 2007 NHL entry draft. In 2013 Subban was the first Black hockey player to win the James Norris award, given to the best defenseman in the NHL annually. Subban has played for the Canadiens, Predators, and Devils over the course of his 10 year NHL career. On September 15, 2015 Subban pledged to donate $10 Million dollars for the Montreal Children’s Hospital, which the hospital called “the biggest philanthropic commitment by a sports figure in Canadian history.” In 2017, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Cross (Civil Division) in recognition of how his "generous gift stands as an example of how professional athletes can positively change lives in their communities". After his trade to Nashville, Subban continued his philanthropy. The "P.K.'s Blue Line Buddies" focused on building better relations between law enforcement and inner-city youths, by treating a police officer, a youth and their guests to a Predators home game with perks like autographs and dinner in Bridgestone Arena's Patron Platinum Club. After being traded to the New Jersey Devils, Subban continued his Blue Line Buddies initiative in New Jersey. Subban wanted to make sure that his program reached out to somewhere other than Nashville.

Jarome Iginla

Jarome Arthur-Leigh Adekunle Tig Junior Elvis Iginla was born on July 1 1977, in Edmonton, Alberta. Iginla played over 1500 NHL games with the Flames, Penguins, Bruins, Avalanche, and Kings, putting up 1300 points. Iginla also played junior hockey prior to being drafted number 11 overall in the 1995 NHL entry draft by the Dallas Stars. In 1996, Iginla was named WHL player of the year, and he also won the WHL’s memorial cup with his team the Kamloops Blazers. After making his NHL debut, Iginla’s illustrious career, which included 6 all star appearances, a Mark Messier leadership award, and a 10 year captaincy of the Calgary Flames began. Iginla leads the Flames franchise in goals, points, and games played, trailing only hall of famer Al MacInnis in assists. Iginla has also represented Canada internationally on multiple occasions, winning two gold medals in three Olympic appearances. In his first year of eligibility, Iginla was inducted into the 2018 NHL Hall of Fame class.

Willie O’Ree

"Fans would yell, 'Go back to the South' and 'How come you're not picking cotton?' Things like that. It didn't bother me. I just wanted to be a hockey player, and if they couldn't accept that fact, that was their problem, not mine."

Willie Eldon O’Ree was the first NHL player of African descent. O’Ree was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, on October 15, 1935, and is known as the Jackie Robinson of the NHL. In 45 career NHL games, O’Ree recorded 4 goals, and 10 assists for 14 points. O’Ree was the target for many racist remarks throughout his playing career, but his impact on hockey could never be diminished. O’Ree’s dedication to the sport of hockey was recognized when he was inducted into the NHL, and the Canada Sports Hall of Fame, in 2018, and 2020 respectively.
