Instructor Announcement: Shawn Szakelyhidi Joins the 2025–2026 Focus Performance Winter Hitting Clinics

Focus Performance is proud to welcome Shawn Szakelyhidi as one of the instructors for the 2025–2026 Winter Hitting Clinics.

Shawn brings decades of coaching experience, program-building leadership, and a proven track record of developing high-level baseball talent. After completing his collegiate playing career at Elon College, Shawn began coaching at Western Alamance High School in North Carolina, laying the foundation for what would become an impressive coaching résumé.

He went on to serve as the Varsity Head Coach at Spotsylvania High School from 1997–1999 before becoming the first-ever Head Coach at Colonial Forge High School. As the school’s inaugural coach, Shawn built the program from the ground up, establishing a strong culture of discipline, accountability, and development that still defines Forge baseball today. During his 15 years as Head Coach (2000–2015), he coached numerous athletes who continued on to play college and professional baseball, including one who reached the major leagues. Of the 116 players who came through the Colonial Forge program during his tenure, 115 went on to attend college—clear proof of Shawn’s commitment to his athletes’ futures both on and off the field.

Shawn later served as a Varsity Assistant Coach at Courtland High School from 2016–2019, continuing to influence young athletes with his experience, detail-oriented coaching style, and player-first approach.
In addition to his high school coaching career, Shawn spent eight years as a key instructor with the Gregg Ritchie Starting Lineup Hitting Clinic and has taught at numerous regional clinics, helping hundreds of hitters improve their mechanics, mindset, and overall approach at the plate.

Shawn’s decades of experience, his emphasis on discipline, and his proven ability to develop successful players and people make him a tremendous addition to the Focus Performance Winter Hitting Clinic staff. We are excited for our athletes to benefit from his insight, leadership, and passion for the game.

Instructor Announcement: Steve Hutson Joins the 2025–2026 Focus Performance Winter Hitting Clinics

Focus Performance is proud to welcome back Steve Hutson as one of the instructors for the 2025–2026 Winter Hitting Clinics.

Steve brings more than 30 years of coaching and player-development experience, making him one of the most seasoned hitting minds in the region. Since 2006, he has served as the Varsity Assistant Coach at Mountain View High School, where he plays a key role in developing the program’s hitters, guiding their offensive approach, and helping athletes grow both technically and mentally. Many Mountain View players who have trained under Steve have gone on to succeed at the collegiate and professional levels.

Before joining Mountain View, Steve spent 10 years as the Varsity Assistant Coach at North Stafford High School(1995–2005). During his tenure there, he helped shape numerous high-performing athletes who would also continue their baseball careers at higher levels.

Steve has also spent 15 years coaching at the Commonwealth Games, working with some of the top talent in the North Region—athletes who routinely advanced to collegiate and professional baseball.

One of the defining aspects of Steve’s coaching journey is his long-standing relationship with former MLB hitting coach Gregg Ritchie. Since the early 1990s, Steve has worked closely with and learned from Ritchie, gaining advanced insight into elite hitting mechanics, mental preparation, approach, and player development. This three-decade mentorship has deeply shaped Steve’s coaching philosophy, blending technical precision with a strong emphasis on confidence, discipline, and understanding the game within the game.

Steve’s unmatched experience, teaching ability, and commitment to player growth make him an invaluable part of the Focus Performance Winter Hitting Clinic. We’re excited for our athletes to benefit from his knowledge again this year.

Instructor Announcement: Britt Yount Joins the 2025–2026 Focus Performance Winter Hitting Clinics

Focus Performance is excited to welcome Britt Yount as one of the instructors for the 2025–2026 Winter Hitting Clinics.

Britt brings NCAA Division I experience and a strong coaching background to this year’s program. A Stafford native and Mountain View High School graduate, Britt was a four-year varsity player and team captain before continuing his career at George Mason University, where he spent four seasons as a right-handed pitcher. During his collegiate career, he made 65 appearances and logged over 80 innings, gaining high-level insight into how pitchers think, attack hitters, and design game plans—knowledge he now uses to help hitters improve their approach at the plate.

Instructor Announcement: Tristan McAlister Joins the 2025–2026 Focus Performance Winter Hitting Clinics

Focus Performance is excited to welcome Tristan McAlister as one of the instructors for the 2025–2026 Winter Hitting Clinics.

A Fredericksburg native, Tristan brings a strong blend of Division I operations experience, player development expertise, and high-level playing credentials. He is currently an Assistant Coach at the University of Mary Washington, where he oversees the program’s hitting development.

Tristan previously served as the Director of Baseball Operations at UNC Greensboro and Mount St. Mary’s University, where he played a major role in player development, scouting, and technology-driven advancement. At The Mount, he managed and analyzed Trackman data, contributed to scouting and skill development, and coordinated program operations. His time there coincided with back-to-back 22-win seasons, the program’s first playoff victory since 2018, and a new single-season stolen base record (102).

Tristan also gained professional baseball experience as an associate scout for the Baltimore Orioles and through his work assisting the Detroit Tigers with prospect workouts. His responsibilities included video capture, written evaluations, on-field support, and assisting with MLB prospect development environments.

As an athlete, Tristan’s career began at Patrick Henry Community College, where he hit .353, led the nation with 52 stolen bases, earned all-region honors, and was named to the NJCAA World Series All-Tournament Team. He later starred at Mount St. Mary’s, posting a .323 career average—finishing inside the program’s top 15 all-time—and ranking top five in stolen bases (37). He went on to play summer collegiate baseball in the NECBL and Valley League with the Mystic Schooners, Wi******er Royals, and Purcellville Cannons.

Beyond his collegiate and professional experiences, Tristan has provided private instruction to hitters and position players from the professional, college, and high school levels, specializing in hitting, base stealing, and defensive development.

We’re thrilled to have Tristan join the Winter Hitting Clinics staff and bring his experience, energy, and player-development expertise to the athletes at Focus Performance.
