Frederick Girls Cross Country Earns Third at 3A State Championships

PARKTON, Md. — The Frederick High School girls cross country team continued its run of excellence Saturday, finishing third overall at the MPSSAA Class 3A State Championship at Hereford High School.

The Cadets’ performance marks their fourth straight top-three finish, following three consecutive state runner-up seasons from 2022–2024 — further proof of the program’s remarkable consistency.

Leading the way for Frederick was Yasmeena Hassen Friess, who placed 12th overall in 20:26.72 on the notoriously difficult Hereford course — described by The Washington Post’s Sean P. Flynn as “The Toughest Three Miles in Cross-Country.” The course includes the punishing Backhills and The Dip, a steep ravine runners must conquer twice.

After crossing the line, Hassen Friess credited the team’s chemistry and mindset as the key to their success.

“Anyone can be trained for this race,” she said, “but the real success is the product of a mentally tough team, coaches who put their heart and souls into us, and some Olive Garden.”

Olivia Gregory was close behind in 25th (20:53.79), giving the Cadets two runners in the top 25. Reflecting on the effort, Gregory said the team’s unity made all the difference:

“The resilience, perseverance, and the spirit of Frederick Girls Cross Country was shown in our race today,” Gregory said. “It took all of us, each doing our part, to perform the way we did.”

Samantha Milsovic (22:14.16), Ysebelle Soto (22:22.73), Danica Arrington (22:36.97), Olivia Park (23:09.15), and Antje Romano (26:36.13) rounded out the scoring for Frederick.

The Cadets’ third-place finish came down to a tie-breaker with Thomas S. Wootton High School, as both teams totaled 164 points. Park’s time ultimately broke the tie — finishing 1:14.64 faster than Wootton’s sixth runner to secure the podium spot behind Centennial (2nd) and Severna Park (1st).

Head coach Sage Norton praised her team’s perseverance and character throughout the season.

“This group has pushed each other for years. The season started rocky, but when it mattered most, they brought their best — to practice, to meets, and for one another,” Norton said. “Today we rose above the doubters and raced from start to finish. This is the kind of group that lives on for years to come.”

With another top-three finish in the books, the Cadets once again proved why they remain one of the Mid-Atlantic’s most consistently dominant programs.
