Hello AWBA Members,

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of AWBA member & past treasurer & chairman, AWBA Hall of Famer, Walter Roy.

Walt’s contributions & impacts to the AWBA are numerous: He was chair from 2009 to 2011, & previously Treasurer from 1993 to
1996. He was also Director of the 2005 AWBA National Championships.

Walt’s name is also featured many times in our National Program Book: He was the National Scratch Champion in 1988, 1996, 2003, 2007, 2011, & 2015; All Events Champion in 1996 1998, 2001, 2009, & 2010; & Doubles Champion (with Mark Shepherd) in 2009. He also won the Tournament of Champions nine times.

Walt & his surviving wife Helena, herself an AWBA Honorary Life Member, helped establish our program of embroidered Swatch banners presented to our National Champions.

Walter Roy was inducted into the AWBA Hall of Fame in 1998.

RIP L.E.

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of L.E. Curtis.
L.E. Curtis was a beloved member of Nevada PVA. Always cheerful, always had a smile on his face and always willing to go above and beyond, he brought kindness, dedication, and a generous spirit to those around him.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the early stages of the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1966 as an HM2, Hospital Corpsman Second Class.

He studied at San Diego State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Science, and at San Jose State University, where he earned a Master of Public Health.

Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure and we are so grateful you touched our lives.

We are pleased to announce updates to the September tournament that’s been held in Virginia for several years. Again, this is a partnership with the and the .

This year, the tournament is moving to in Hampton, Virginia. This is in the Hampton Roads/Norfolk area; for those booking airline flights, the best options are Norfolk International (ORF) or Newport News/Williamsburg (PHF). The center is about the same distance/driving time from either airport, but NOR will require crossing the Hampton Roads Bridge/Tunnel.

Further, the dates listed on the AWBA website are incorrect; what’s there were anticipated. The tournament will run September 11-12-13. Please plan accordingly.

Century Lanes is undergoing a major overhaul; they are installing new synthetic lanes, bringing all 32 pinsetters to full operation. The settee is being brought level with the approaches and concourse, and both AWBA and PVA leadership have been in touch with the center in anticipation of this event. We will definitely have a better experience for everyone, including bowlers, spectators, organizers, and Up/Down participants.

For those who have previously driven to Short Pump, the new location is about 90 minutes down I-64 to the east.

Additional notes: Within proximity to Century Lanes is the Hampton Coliseum, with its surrounding area including several hotels, restaurants, and shopping areas. The greater Hampton Roads is also home to the Yorktown Battlefield, where Cornwallis surrendered, ending hostilities of the American Revolution.

It is with heavy hearts that we share this with you. We lost one of our bowlers in Michael Tucker on May 11th. R.I.P. Michael! You will be missed.

A few hours after the newsletter was emailed, the website became updated to include electronic entries for National.

Therefore, you may register & pay through that means.
