Read this article in the Post, so well written by our very own club Reporter. These kids are doing great things! They are learning and growing in such a positive way. We are only able to participate in these events and teach these athletes with help from the community and our wonderful friends with the NRA Foundation. They graciously fulfilled a grant this year for much needed upgraded equipment. We are so grateful!

Don't forget to register for this event! It looks like so much fun. What a great way for the kids to get a little showing experience!

Don't forget to register your child for the Critterless Critter Competition taking place at the Eastern Shore Ag. Fair this weekend. It's kind of like a livestock show, but with stuffed animals. It's a fun way to provide youth with a showing experience, to have youth gain confidence of speaking to others, and to learn to think on their feet. Link to register: bit.ly/3Ryi2uu

As we make our way home from the Spring Air Shoot this weekend, I want to share how proud of these kids we are. What an amazing group we have! They are caring, kind, resilient, dedicated, and so much more. We had such a great time and the awards coming home are a 1st place in public speaking, gold in archery, as well as 2 silvers and a bronze. 3rd place team in jr archery, 3rd place senior genesis archery, as well as numerous ribbons in air rifle and silhouette. Great job team!

Is it time to start seedlings for summer veggies yet?! It depends. Different summer crops should be started at different times, for example peppers (ideally) need 8 weeks before being transplanted, while squash need only 4 weeks or less.

If you are in the warmest parts of the commonwealth and you'd like to get your transplants in the ground as soon as your last frost date passes, now is the time to start transplants for crops that take 8 weeks.

Last frost dates for VA:
Zone 6a: 5/5 - 5/15
Zone 6b: 4/25 - 5/5
Zone 7a: 4/15 - 4/25
Zone 7b: 4/5 - 4/15
Zone 8a: 4/5 - 4/15

Remember that your last frost date is just an estimate and you should still be careful putting plants like tomatoes outside as the date arrives--always check your weather and use your judgement about whether its time to transplant. Your local Master Gardeners can also help!
