That’s a wrap for The National Professional Fishing League tournament on Lay Lake. After burying my Dad last Friday I wasn’t sure if I had it in me to fish this week but somehow I got through it? I wound up finishing 22nd and got some mich need AOY points and a decent paycheck so all in all it was a solid week. I have fished this old impoundment for most of my life and between the spraying of the vegetation and aging it just isn’t the same pond that it once was. I’ll do a full wrap up video tomorrow on how I caught my fish but for now I need some shut eye! GAMMA Fishing Tip May 6, 2026

Al Bell (better known in fishing circles as Angler Al) is a trout magnet. No, not the brand name of a little soft plastic tidbit used for trout. Rather, Al magically attracts trout to the hook, like bees to honey. If you want to catch more trout, listen to Al’s tip this week.
Al says: As an avid live bait fisherman, I have always had great success using small pieces of a nightcrawler – rather than the entire crawler. By small, I mean pieces 1-inch to no more than 1-1/2- inches long. Most of the time, I prefer the tail end of the crawler, which is lighter in color – almost cream I would say – than the head section which is more maroon and red. I work it with a single bb shot pinched on the line a few feet above the hook. Make a cast downstream, and on the retrieve, drag the piece of worm upward toward the top of the current column. This makes the piece of nightcrawler appear as though it is a nymph trying to emerge, reach the surface and fly off of the water. You can hold the presentation high in the top of the current like a wet fly; trout are easily fooled. I use Gamma Polyflex on my spinning reel, and when fly fishing, I tie my own leaders with Gamma Line, too.

Weekly Gamma Fishing Tip:
IT’S ICE OUT CRAPPIE TIME!
From Darl Black
Right now, some crappies are active (but moody) in select shallow water sites. This is not the spawn, but a feeding foray into protected backwater areas that are warming rapidly and producing plankton that is attracting minnows, which in turn attract crappies – almost always Black Crappies. For the next several weeks (give or take depending on weather), crappies may be found in extremely shallow bays, inlets, canals and marshy backwaters, particularly black bottom areas with w**d remnants (especially old pads), beaver huts, rotted deadfalls and brushy stick ups. No boat needed; short cast from shore to target water depths from 15 inches to 30 inches (may be hair deeper some lakes). Do not over think the presentation. Apply the KISS philosophy –Keep It Simple Stupid. A long, light action spinning rod spooled with 4-pound test Gamma Optic Yellow Panfish line, a very small bobber, a 1/32-ounce jighead with a 1” soft plastic bait tipped with either a small live minnow or Berkley Gulp. A tiny hand-tied hair jig in white with some silver tinsel will work just as well, too. Go Fish!

Gamma Tip for March 4, 2026:
- Know Your Jerkbaits
- From Darl Black
It’s Jerkbait Season! Yes, river walleye anglers have been fishing jerkbaits in flowing water all winter. But right now, as ice cover on lakes is disappearing, jerkbaits are about to become a critically important lure for several species as each species moves towards the shallows to spawn. First up are Northern Pike just as the ice cover melts until early April. Next, it’s Walleye on Pymatuning in the latter part of March and into April. Then its Largemouth Bass and Smallmouth as they stage to move into spawning areas in latter part of April and into May. But do you know the specific ups and downs of each your jerkbaits? Do you know which ones actually suspend horizontally? Which ones angle head down or hear up? Or which ones sink slowly? Which ones rise slowly? You will likely be surprised. Set up a tank of water (or sink) to test them. Then decide if you wish to tweak the angle at rest or slow the rise of a jerkbait by adding Storm SuspenDots and SuspenStrips. Most anglers fish suspending jerkbaits on braided line with a 5 to 8-foot leader of fluorocarbon. Extremely tough Gamma Edge is the perfect leader material for jerkbaits.

Gamma Line Tip for February 25, 2026
From Darl Black
Mention tools of the trade to anglers, and rods, reels, lines & lures immediately come to mind. However, every angler would be up the proverbial “creek without a paddle” if they didn’t have the following accessory tools within reach.
Pinch-Style Clippers – An inexpensive nail clipper is still efficient for cutting extruded nylon or fluorocarbon fishing line.
Braided Line Scissors – Braided line is comprised of many fine strands of spun gel woven together. Pinch-style clippers only mash it down. A special type of small scissor is required to make a clean cut. Braided line scissors may be obtained at local bait & tackle shops as well as on-line tackle stores for around $10.
Jig Eye Cleaning Tool – This inexpensive tool cleans paint from the lie tie eye of a jig, thereby eliminating the risky action of using another hook point to chip away paint in order to tie the jig on the line.
Long-Nose Pliers – An ordinary pair of 6- or 7-inch long-nose pliers is usually the go-to tool used by anglers to extract hooks from a fish. The jaws of these pliers allow the angler to reach hooks outside of jaw or inside the mouth of medium to large-size fish.
Bent-Nose Pliers – Standard-size long nose pliers are too large for small fish that inhale a bait hook. However, a small pair of bent-nose pliers with its 90-degree bend at the tip is a “finesse” tool for this circumstance. Furthermore, bent-nose pliers are best thing for removing circle hooks from any size fish by enabling a 360-degree rotation of hook.
Baker Hookout – When a large toothy critter (Muskellunge, Northern Pike, Bowfin) or monster catfish takes a bait deep into the mouth, the Hookout is the tool to grab. Its long shaft with offset pistol grip handle enables one to see down the fish’s mouth to grab the hook without getting fingers near the predator’s teeth.
Don’t wait until you really need a hook cutter to realize you do not have one. Standard long-nose pliers will not cut hook wire. You should have either a pair of Diagonal Cutters or pair of End Nippers. Diagonal Cutters will handle light-wire hooks, but I prefer a six-inch pair of End Nippers for standard wire hooks (short of musky-grade hooks). Although heavier and a little more expensive than Diagonal wire cutters, End Nippers get the job done efficiently.
Every hook will eventually need sharpening. For cutting-point hooks in sizes #6 and larger, a small Fine-Tooth Flat File is the deal. I prefer “ole yeller” – a 3-inch file with yellow handle which has been around for decades. For smaller hooks, a Hook Hone with groove (fine grit Aluminum Oxide Stone) is the answer; simply run the point through the groove.

Molecularly Altered Line offered by Gamma
By Dale Black, President of Black Knight Industries, home of Gamma Line.

It’s that time of year when anglers are re-spooling their reels for the start of spring fishing. Below are the lines offered by Gamma, and tips on selecting the right line for your style of fishing.

Polyflex – nylon base copolymer (i.e. monofilament). Being a nylon base line, Polyflex is supple with low coil memory for easier casting, has higher breaking strength up to 2x the stated size and it floats. However, Polyflex is not as sensitive or as abrasion resistant as fluorocarbon. But it is a premium copolymer with has a price point lower than fluorocarbon and can be tinted. Available options include Clear, Fluorescent Blue, Moss Green and Hi-Vis Gold. Considered a superior all-around line for topwater, crankbaits, spinnerbaits and for fishing live bait. (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 17, 20, 25, and 30-lb test)

Optic Yellow Panfish – a specially formulated nylon copolymer hi-vis line specifically for panfishing. Highly visible above water to the angler, but less visible underwater. Extremely popular line with bluegill and crappie anglers; for all crappie techniques and riggings. (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12-lb test)

Edge – a main line fluorocarbon with great sensitivity and abrasion resistance compared to copolymer lines. Edge sinks rather than floats, and is practically invisible under water. Generally preferred for jigging, jig worms, flipping, swimbaits, swim jigs and other subsurface presentation that require a quick response firm hookset. (4, 6 ,8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 20, and 25-lb test)

Touch – a smaller diameter fluorocarbon referred to super fluorocarbon line. Most often used with finesse presentations of smaller baits, especially for drop-shotting and Ned Rigs. (2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9-lb test)

100% Fluoro –transparent leader material used as leader material in saltwater and for very large freshwater fish.

ESP Ice & FC Ice – ice fishing lines down to 1 pound test; flexible in ice cold water.

Frog Hair – Fluorocarbon and copolymer fly fishing specialty leaders and tippet material for freshwater and saltwater.

Torque is Gamma’s entry in the braid market with four carrier spun Spectra Braid. Torque is not an extruded line and therefore does not undergo the Molecularly Altered process. Torque features maximum strength, high sensitivity, and very small diameter for its state rating. Perfect for hollow frogs and buzzbait fishing. With many lures, Torque is a main line on a reel with a long 6’ to 10’ leader of Polyflex or Edge.
