The Recreation Department is a service-based department.

We are a self supporting department, replying on our program fees to cover our expenses. We work interactively with local sports organizations, Franklin public school department, individual Town residents, private groups, as well as other Town departments. In the course of a given year, over 8,000 people are affected by Recreation operations. Our clientele continues to increase each year. Recreati

on is responsible for scheduling all fields, playgrounds, and courts. The Recreation Department continues to serve the residents in the area of recreation and leisure services.

• Coordinate recreational activities with the youth sports organizations, school department, non profit organizations and other citizens groups.
• Better utilization of park land and coordination of fields, and conservation land within the Town of Franklin.
• Improve the quality of life and involve residents in recreational programs.
• Establish new programs as self-supporting and explore ways of generating additional revenue through grants, donations and fundraising.
• Recreation activities are coordinated through our office, which is comprised of one full time director, one full time program coordinators and one part time clerical staff person.

Looking for a colorful, creative activity for your children this July? Bring them over to the Parmenter Art Room for a sweet afternoon of painting! We’re setting up the easels to paint this delicious, multi-scoop ice cream cone on a vibrant rainbow background.

No painting experience? No problem! This class is designed for all skill levels from Grades 1–5. We step them through it, and yes—all materials are provided!

💨 Lace up those sneakers—the Franklin Youth Open Track & Field Meets are back this July! ☀️🏅

Looking for a fun, active way for the kids to spend their summer evenings? Whether they want to sprint, jump, throw, or just run around with friends, we’ve got an event for them! Hosted by the Franklin Recreation Department and organized by FHS and TCRVTHS coaches, these meets are the perfect way to get moving and have some friendly competition.

📅 When: Tuesdays – July 7, 14, & 21
⏰ Timeline:

5:00 PM – Check-In & Field Events begin

6:00 PM – Running Events kick off
📍 Where: Franklin High School Track
💵 Cost: Just $5 admission for UNLIMITED events!

👟 Events Include:

Field Events: Shot Put, Turbo Javelin, Long Jump

Running Events: Mini Hurdle (5 & under), 100M Dash, 200M Dash, 400M Dash, 800M, Mile, and Relays!

From our tiniest sprinters (5 & under hurdles!) to seasoned young athletes, there is something for everyone. Come for one night or join us for all three!

Franklin Residents Only: The beach is open for Franklin residents only.

🚧 Important Access & Traffic Detour
When: Starting Saturday, June 13th at 12:00 AM through Monday, June 15th.

The Route: Access to Chilson Beach / Beaver Pond will ONLY be available via Grove St.

Closure: You will not be able to access the beach area from Rt. 140 during this time.

🎓 Congrats to the Franklin Recreation Class of 2026! 🎓

We want to take a moment to shine a massive spotlight on our graduating high school seniors who have spent years dedicating their time, energy, and smiles to the Franklin Recreation community. Whether they started out as young participants themselves or jumped right into leading, these incredible individuals have been the backbone of our seasonal programs.

Over the years, you’ve probably seen them keeping things running smoothly in every corner of town. They have stepped up in all sorts of ways, working hard as summer camp counselors, basketball referees, field hockey referees, track program aides, flag football referees, street hockey coaches, gate guards, and so much more!

To our graduates: our programs quite literally would not be possible without you. Your leadership, patience, and enthusiasm have left a lasting, positive impact on the Franklin community and the next generation of recreation kids. We are so incredibly proud of the leaders you've become, and we wish you the absolute best of luck as you take your next big steps! 🌟

🌟 MAY EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT 🌟
This month, the Town of Franklin Recreation Department is incredibly proud to highlight two outstanding team members who make our programs shine! Join us in celebrating Matt Pellecchia and Chris Shanahan! 🙌

🏈 Matt Pellecchia
Matt joined the Rec team officially in October 2022 as a flag football referee. Since then, he’s done a little bit of everything—from refereeing and coaching indoor and summer street hockey, to officiating youth basketball and keeping our facilities secure as a gate guard.

When he's not at the Rec: Matt loves hanging out with friends, playing video games, and spending time with his parents (Bob & Eve), his three older siblings, and his dog, Luna.

Fun Fact: Matt is a die-hard Boston sports fan, and his favorite current New England Patriot is quarterback Drake Maye! 🏈🔴🔵

🏀 Chris Shanahan
Chris has been a vital part of Franklin Recreation since 2021! Over the years, he has tackled a variety of roles, including refereeing and coaching basketball, working summer camp, and running vacation-week baseball and flag football clinics. He even dedicated extra time to giving back as a volunteer basketball coach in our winter Rec Basketball League!

When he's not at the Rec: Chris loves spending time at home with his mom, dad, older brother Thomas, and the family dog.

Fun Fact: Chris recently wrapped up an internship with the Recreation Department, which successfully doubled as his FHS Senior Project! 🎓👏

Thank you, Matt and Chris, for your dedication, hard work, and endless energy for the youth and families of Franklin! We are so lucky to have you both on our team. 💙✨

From college students majoring in health and safety to lifelong former campers returning as leaders, this year’s staff is packed with responsible, enthusiastic, and fun-loving counselors.
