SLMS Finishes 2023 Season Strong
November 19, 2023 - The South Eastern Late Model Series finished out their 2023 season in exciting fashion at the Georgia State Championships held at Lavonia Speedway. This widely diverse series drew in over 18 cars from all over the region, some traveling as far as Tennessee.
After qualifying the field was set for the main event with Drew Collins and Brandon Haley occupying the front row. On the initial drop of the green it appeared Haley was going to take the lead, however, there was a multi car pile-up in turn one and two bringing out the caution and resetting the field. On the second start Drew Collins was able to capture the lead, but right on his fenders was the 2 of Terry Poore from Seymore, Tennessee.
For several laps Poore and Collins were locked it a clash of titans, bringing the crowd to their feet several times cheering on their favorite driver. Poore eventually managed to get his #2 ahead of the of Collins. Determined to regain the lead Collins began driving his high flying machine to the high side of the track. This made for some very exciting moments during the race, however it ultimately cost him the race when he gaged a little too high making contact to the outside wall bringing an end to his night of racing.
Poore continued to dominated the rest of the field for the remaining laps to take home the victory. Larry Timms who also had a strong showing passing several cars throughout the night came in second, sealing the title as 2023 SLMS Champion.
When interviewed after the race the Poore stated he had talked himself out of coming but thought what the heck coming in at the last minute. Glad he made the decision because it ultimately lead to him taking home $2,000 and the all coveted Georgia State Champion title belt.
Although this was the last race of the season for the South Eastern Late Models, Randy McCoy the series owner/operator is already looking to the future for 2024, hoping to schedule several new races for the upcoming season. One of the first being the Spring Natty in late February, at Lavonia Speedway.
