Last night’s Pork Roast on the Weber Kettle. Seasoned with Heath Riles BBQ Garlic Jalapeño and glazed with Croix Valley pineapple habanero. I liked it, I loved it and we all wanted more of it.

Well Done Wrentham Police and Fire!

Last week we took the long ride to the Inclusive BBQ Events Massachusetts in May KCBS competetion.

This is by far the closest barbecue competetion to our home. (Just 1 traffic light).

As we headed home there was an accident closing the only road the trailer can navigate. Several cars and of course our truck were stuck until the accident was cleared. The WPD quickly re-routed all the oncoming traffic but many of us were ‘stuck’

We watched as all the stuck cars turned around and followed the detour. Finally Grumpy Old Patriot and our 35 foot trailer were the only ones left.

We patiently waited as the ambulance left, and the site was cleared. The entire process took just 15-20 minutes. Everyone worked together to care for the victims and clear the scene.

We spoke with Sargent Morris (Cruiser - Wrentham's Community Resource Dog seemed to have the afternoon off)and Officer Ellis as we drove off. Only wish we had some Barbecue left to share at the time. We will drop some off at the station next time we have a competition.

For years we have joked about how long and dangerous the ride to the Competitions at the Wrentham American Legion Post 225 can be. We aren’t joking anymore.

What a fantastic weekend at Mass in May in Wrentham!

After a few weeks off and having all 4 team members in the trailer we struggled to find a Rhythm on Day 1. Our Chicken and Ribs were just ok and our scores reflected that.

Day 2 we rallied!
We took first in Chicken! missing a perfect score by just .56 points. Our Chicken Score of 179.44 is our highest KCBS Score ever! We received an invitation to compete in the 2027 KCBS World Chicken Finals in Tennessee.

Ribs, 19th 167.38/180
Pork 15th 169.12/180
Brisket 15 168.58/180
Overall, we placed 11th out of 31 Teams with an overall score of 684.53

We’re happy with the results and excited to keep this momentum building as the season rolls on.

Is competition barbecue stressful?

This weekend we head to the 5th Massachusetts in May KCBS Competition.

After 2 solid weeks of sitting in a hospital as the woman who watched me take my first breath, gasped to take her last, I have never looked forward to a competetion more.

The last 2 weeks were stress. Our mother, grandmother, friend and biggest supporter passed away earlier this week. Without her love support and encouragement we wouldn’t be here today. Without her, my sons and I would not have existed. We would have never met the guys that comprise the Grumpy Old Patriot Barbeque team. In that way she was the actual founder of the Grumpy Old Patriot Barbeque team in addition to being a hell of a cook.

She had a unique way of keeping things in perspective. Her glass (of scotch) was always half full (maybe a quarter). We are hoping to channel her perspective this weekend.

Is barbecue stressful, I used to think so. Maybe it is. I’m really quite certain this weekend will be therapeutic.

If you are around the Wrentham American Legion and can stop by after 5:00 on Friday or Saturday come and raise a glass with me in her honor.

In the meantime cherish the time you have with the people you love. Otherwise who’s eating all the barbecue you cook.

What a weekend! We competed in the Grand American Barbecue World Championship Open. In addition to a heck of a Competition there was a really cool festival running at the same time. There were Bands, Distilleries, and Craft Food Vendors. We took advantage of the free samples and made our contribution to the local economy.

As luck would have it we were treated to an early morning soul serenade by our new friend Luke Darnell of Old Virginia Smoke. We met new friends and connected with old ones. The Blue & Gray BBQ Kentucky Derby party was awesome.

The Grumpy Old Patriot Team watched the judging as teams turned in their Cocktail Competition Creations The creativity was amazing.

In a field of 65 KCBS Masters Teams from as far away a as Alaska we placed 14th.

Overall we scored 688.53 our highest KCBS score ever!

Campground BBQ Jeremy and Scott this was an amazing weekend, we will be back.
