Stretching may look pretty straightforward, but it’s more complicated than it seems. There are different stretching routines, such as passive and dynamic stretching, with each more suited to a specific exercise style.

Just about everyone will be aware of static stretching routines. Bending one knee while stretching the other leg out at an angle to stretch the calf muscle is a popular routine runners use, and touching your toes is another.

Dynamic stretching puts your muscles through their complete range of motion for 10 or 20 repetitions. Dynamic stretching routines include trunk rotation, where you rotate at the waste to warm up your back muscles, or holding your arms out straight and performing widening circles with your hands to get the shoulders nice and supple.

It can be hard to know who to believe, so I’m here to tell you about the benefits of stretching, why stretching is essential, and when you should do it.
