I’m stupid excited for Nashville. I’ve been tearing up watching videos and prepping costumes, and I’m beyond excited to see my amazing friend from Seattle who’s going with me.
I’m 46, and I might be entering my first adult dance competition. I have zero idea what to expect. I only just learned the four dances, and I’m still giving myself permission to back out. But here’s the funny part.
As a behavioral specialist who works with neurodivergent children, I see them hit obstacles and melt down constantly. “It’s too hard. I don’t get it. I don’t want to do this anymore.” I’ve heard it all, and I deeply sympathize, because the world wasn’t built for the neurodivergent human. It’s loud and overwhelming.
That’s probably why I find solace on the dance floor. Counterintuitive, I know, but concerts, sporting events, and dance floors give some reprieve because everyone’s focused on the same thing and brainwaves actually coordinate. So for someone who notices everything, all the time, my brain gets a tiny vacation.
With line dancing, you’re learning a routine, which builds new neural networks and improves memory, until you switch walls mid-routine and your brain just goes blank. If you’ve ever line danced, you know exactly what I’m talking about. It also improves balance and coordination, all while sweating your ass off in the most fun cardio there is.
This weekend? It’s nonstop learning. Workshops from 10-5 and then live concerts, a silent disco and dance floors to put into practice what we learned that day… for those of us that went through dance and cheer camp - it’s the same thing. I will be wrapping myself in icy hot and Saran Wrap at the end of the night but it will be oh soooooo worth it. Three days of becoming better than where I was just moments before. 😍 and… yes… perhaps some whining that it’s too hard. 🤣
So my posts this week might look a little different, less self-improvement, more evidence. This is the proof, live, of the mindset and methods I actually teach.
I’m dopamine dressing. Sparkles up the ass, new boots breaking in, and I’ll be smiling so big, or at least on the inside. My RBF comes through strong on the dance floor sometimes.
No matter what age you are, you deserve to be excited about something. I hope you enjoy watching me absolutely love life for the next few days.
