Races often take place in parks and consist of laps on a 1.5-2 mile course featuring pavement, grass, hills, berms, and obstacles such as sand or manmade barriers that require the rider to dismount and run while carrying their bicycle for a short distance. Races are organized by skill level categories, or age in some cases, and usually last from 30-60 minutes depending on the skill level of the ri
der. Cyclocross is often called the "steeplechase of cycling." It requires a broad range of skills such as power, stamina, speed, bike handling skills, and running. No two courses are the same and usually play to different strengths. But most of all cyclocross is fun! It's a family and spectator friendly sport that any level of rider can enjoy and test their skills against riders of similar ability. Here's a great article from Sports Illustrated about the sport: http://www.si.com/edge/2014/09/04/Cyclocross-bike-race-extreme-physical-conditions
